Have a big interview coming up in a few days, for a job I really, really want. I have never had a really formal, panel interview before.

So if you had one tip to help me nail it, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to have a notebook - either in person or during a Zoom interview. Take short notes, have questions written down, whatever. It looks like you’re interested and prepared.

Also don’t be afraid to take a moment before you answer so you can calm your mind and answer confidently. Take a sip of water to stall.

Good luck!

I imagine it depends on your field a bit. For me it is all about the prep - read and reread the relevent recent white papers, policies, guidelines. Be prepared to talk about recent media coverage relating to our area.

A tip I heard on here was to ask the interviewers, right at the end, what they themselves most enjoyed about working for the organisation. They absolutely loved it - apparently it can leave them feeling positive and fuzzy about you. I got offered positions both timed I tried it!

Ha, @PennineWayinSlingbacks, someone did ask me a question like that recently, and it did have that effect.

Definitely be enthusiastic about the job, know why you want it. Do your research about the company, even 10 minutes reading their website to understand why they do what they do.

Read through the essentials for the job and have a think about examples for each of them.

Good luck!

@PostItNow I have prompted a couple of interviewees recently about this, when they continually say "we" I don't have any evidence for what they have personally done.

I think giving others credit for the work they have done shows a real sense of generosity - we can and do work with people who are the great “I am” - talented at their job but really quite shit at working as part of a team - it’s the people thing we often need to probe on more deeply on. I would just follow with the asking them how they contributed, it’s not hard.
