Where to get COVID vaccination for DC (15)?

TattiePants · 30/09/2021 15:45

DS brought a COVID vaccination permission form home on Thursday which we returned to school on Monday (he was ill on Friday). We received a text late on Monday night to ask children to wear short sleeves the following day for their vaccination which was the first we knew that vaccines were happening on Tuesday. DS, along with everyone else that was off last week, didn’t get the vaccination as their form hadn’t been returned on Friday.

I called school yesterday to see if there would be a follow up session but they haven’t been told. Our GP will only vaccinate clinically vulnerable children and you need to be 16 to book via the NHS website. No one can offer advice on who to contact. Any ideas?

Have you looked to see if there are walkin clinics locally

TattiePants · 30/09/2021 15:51

@bruffin I didn’t even realise their were walk in clinics! We’re 15 minutes from the regional nightingale hospital / vaccination centre so everyone I know has used that. Thanks, will investigate.

I'm not sure if walk in clinics will do under 16s yet, I thought they could only be done in school but I might be wrong.

It’s worth a try.

Lennybenny · 30/09/2021 15:56

Our school is offering a follow up date for any children who miss the original date. Ours is Virgin Care. Try whoever is providing the actual vaccinations.

BarefootHippieChick · 30/09/2021 15:56

You could also email the school immunisations team if you have their email and ask if there will be any extra dates in school, or alternatively where else you could go with him

Lennybenny · 30/09/2021 15:57

Oh and from the info we had. They won't be doing walk in's for under 16s.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 30/09/2021 16:00

Will they not be coming back in 3 or 4 weeks to do the second dose on those who got the first dose? They might be planning on doing those who missed the first one then.

TattiePants · 30/09/2021 16:00

I’ve found a Facebook page for our local NHS trust so I’ll message them first re walk in clinics for under 16s. @Lennybenny I just assumed it was NHS nurses administering the vaccinations. Will ask the school if it was another organisation.

They aren't currently planning to give a second dose to 12-15 year olds @OchonAgusOchonOh

Under 16s are only getting one vaccination at the moment. Speaking to the school yesterday it sounded like it was all very last minute and they’d been given very little notice and no info re follow ups. I also think they’d significantly underestimated how big the school is as yrs 10 & 11 hadn’t been vaccinated by the end of the school day and had to stay behind.

You need to speak to the local immunisation team - google that plus your area. They're not doing mop up clinics yet, but will be in a few weeks - DS1 didn't have his today as he's unwell, but we're on a list.

TattiePants · 30/09/2021 16:17

I’ve found a number for both the local immunisation team and the school nursing team. No answer but I’ll keep trying them tomorrow.

Didn't realise that. I'm in Ireland and they're getting both doses here.
Gherkingreen · 30/09/2021 17:20

DS' school is doing them next week but he has just had covid so has to wait at least a month.
I can't find out from school any info about kids in his situation.
Will try and contact immunisation team locally.

Djifunrsn · 30/09/2021 17:24

I believe the government commission organisations to do school age immunisations, in schools.

If you google your area + "school age immunisations", you may find the organisation responsible for your area and you may be able to email or phone them.

If you say what city/county you are then someone might be able to tell you which body did their kids. The organisation that did my kids covers 2 counties.

School I work at: head has said they will bet 24 hrs notice of the date.
DS1s school. Consent form came home today, needs returning tomorrow. Vaccination early next week. They have said there will be a catch up at some point.

It all seems a bit chaotic.
Gherkingreen · 30/09/2021 17:34

Thanks @Djifunrsn, that's really helpful. I can't find info online but have asked the school if they can put me in touch with the immunisation team.

TattiePants · 30/09/2021 17:50

I’m in Sunderland, Tyne & Wear if anyone has any specific knowledge.

One thing that just occurred to me, my GP are only vaccinating clinically vulnerable children but would that also include kids with SEN? DS has sensory processing disorder and gets very anxious about injections etc. His yr 9 3-in-1 booster was actually done by the GP as he was too anxious to have it in school. He’d agreed to trying to have the Covid vaccination at school but there was always a chance he’d back out last minute.

Yes, schools don't seem to be giving much notice between filling the form in and actually having the vaccine!

megletthesecond · 30/09/2021 21:09

We didn't have much time either. Forms emailed to us on Friday afternoon to be handed in by Tues. Jabs tomorrow.
