Sad lamps

Does anyone here have a sad lamp?

I am thinking about the idea of getting one of these.

I like the summer time and I like to sleep with the curtains open in the summer time. I find waking up to the natural light in the window is so much more better than be woken by an alarm. I wake easier in the summer time because its brighter. Often I wake without an alarm clock in the summer. I am so much more better for it.

I am not going to lie. I am finding the darker mornings so much more harder now. Everything about the dark mornings. The phone alarms often slept through. The sore head. I hate the darker mornings.

Would a sad lamp help me?

I bought a light a few years ago as gift so that it comes on gradually and simulates dawn so that you wake up as you would in summertime.

A sad lamp is something you sit under.

Would I be looking for a different type of light? If a sad lamp is something you sit under, it's definitely not what I am looking for. I wouldnt say I am depressed with the winter darker as such. I need a light that will help me wake more easily in the winter. So a light that stimulates damn would be what I am looking for.

A SAD lamp is specifically for Seasonal Affective Disorder which is a type of depression associated with seasonal changes - in my case my "usual" mild depression which is held at bay by a very low dose of ADs is notably exacerbated in the winter months. As I was reluctant to up my dose of ADs I tried a SAD lamp last winter, which was incredibly helpful but I don't suppose they work for everyone.

If you feel you suffer from 'winter blues' - lower mood, lack of energy/motivation - then you may benefit but it might be worth getting advice from a GP as there is a big difference between not liking the shorter days and actually having SAD.

You can buy sunlight alarm clocks - they light up time room gradually.

Personally I sleep through them as well. Using a SAD lamp in the day actually makes it easier to get up in the morning - I think I sleep better.

I’d second a lumielight. I have one and it’s pretty good, I only use it October - March but it’s useful. I also make sure I have the heating coming on in the mornings so I’m not dragging myself out of a wam bed into the cold. I also shower evenings not morning for the same reason - in the winter I just can’t face it.

I also take a hefty vitamin C dose.

All things together seems to have some effect.

I am about to buy a smart lightbulb for my bedside lamp with exactly this idea. I’m hoping to be able to programme it to come on slowly in “daylight” mode. Not sure whether I’ll be able to, but will report back in a few days.

Which smart system are you looking at? You can definitely do this with the Hue bulbs, I've not used others but imagine they'll have similar options.

Wiz. Just a bulb and a smartphone app. My DS has some and they are great. I guess I should just ask them… will bother him when he’s home from work. 😁
