Is there anything that deters mice?

I know there’s traps etc but is there anything that they don’t like so would avoid somewhere because of it.

Eg they would avoid somewhere with Jo Malone candles, they much prefer Yankee Candles Grin

No but seriously does that work? Or is it just blocking up holes and putting down boxes etc?

Cats! I live in a Victorian terrace and had mouse problems on and off for years. Tried absolutely everything. Given the age and layout of the house it was impossible to find and block every tiny hole, and they get in the tiniest of holes. I got 2 cats and that did the trick. I did want them as pets anyway, it wasn’t just because of mice, but yeah nothing else worked!

Cats. Rescue cats tend to be better hunters/mice catchers.

Lindy2 · 30/09/2021 11:59

My rescue cat does a pretty good job. 🐱

We live next to a field so she gets pretty regular mousehunts.

My cat, but sorry, you can't have him.

Beamur · 30/09/2021 12:12

I was going to say cats too!

sashh · 30/09/2021 12:14

Cats.

And you can try burning sage.

I used to live in a bedsit in an old house that was infested with mice. The landlord got a cat but it didn't seem to help.

The only room that was mouse-free was mine, because I had pet rats.

When I went home for the holidays (student), taking Ozzy, Tiny and Lori with me, the mice took over my room. I opened the door on my return to see them all over the place. They paused for a split second then ran.

I let the rats out and the mice disappeared. The rats didn't actually attack them, the mice just ran away from them.

But this may not be an option for everybody.

I have one of those sonic repellers
Seems to work
We did use traps initially to get rid but the sonic thing seems to have kept them away

Rats? I had a mouse problem which became a rat problem Shock
Blush
Peppermint oil (apparently) and there's a plug in thing you can get that is meant to deter them. It doesn't.

In the end we bunged the hole we found up with steel wool, cotton wool soaked in peppermint oil and expanding foam. That seemed to work. Haven't seen either since. Probably jinxed myself now Wink

Seeingadistance · 30/09/2021 12:17

Cats.

Dollywilde · 30/09/2021 12:17

Also came to say cats 😻

Brahumbug · 30/09/2021 12:21

Cats and ferrets, both good at dealing with rodents and super cute😁

poohaloo · 30/09/2021 12:26

Find any holes big enough to put a pencil in and put wire wool in it... we had a tiny little hole behind the washing machine where they were getting in.

cosmopolitanplease · 30/09/2021 12:30

Cats. Since our beloved cat died we've been overrun by mice. Nothing works. We can't get another cat at the moment Sad

Neveratruerfriend · 30/09/2021 12:32

Cats can be the solution and also the problem. Ours often brings mice into the house (usually dead ones).

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 30/09/2021 12:35

Has anyone memtioned cats? Grin

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 30/09/2021 12:43

Terriers are FAR better mousers than cats in my experience.

AlrighDaveHowsItGoingAlrigh · 30/09/2021 13:22

I’m allergic to cats Blush

Sorry I really don’t want rats. I will look into peppermint oil though!

We found setting traps initially to get rid helped then removing their food source. Ours were in the under stairs cupboard so we removed all food in packets and they seemed to give up once they had no food

We had one of those and only realised after months that it was set to 'bugs' not 'mice' Blush We had pest control in recently and his best advice was 'Get a cat.' I don't disagree but a) I think I'm allergic and b) I can't bear the thought of when it dies.
SherryPalmer · 30/09/2021 14:41

We also had success with plug in sonic deterrents.
