Hi
Can you use alternative brand pods in nespresso machines? Are they just as good?

You can buy reusable coffee pods and use your own choice of fine blend.

Yes you can use them, I think all the supermarkets sell them now as well as many companies online. Are they as good, depends on your preference for different types of coffee. I don't have a Nespresso machine because of the cost and waste, but friends who do use unofficial ones and don't seem to mind.

Original Line machines you can but Nespresso has the patent on Vertuo pods til 2022 or 2023 in the UK (can't remember which)

There are 2 kinds of Nespresso pods now.

The original size ones can be bought elsewhere but the newer ones can only be bought from Nespresso.

It all depends which kind of machine you get.

CrazyCatStory · 30/09/2021 10:58

We’ve tried quite a few alternative pods to the original Nespresso ones, and they were all pretty poor in comparison. We have the vertuo ones now, and I don’t think they have other companies making them. To be honest I wouldn’t waste my money trying to find a good one again.

Also, at least with Nespresso they take back the used pods to recycle. A lot of the others are mixed materials, so not sure how recycle friendly they are.

chipsandgin · 30/09/2021 10:58

You can - sometimes you have to make sure they’ve clamped in properly as they’re not always as good a fit as the brand ones.

I found some brilliant & delicious biodegradable ones which are far more eco friendly (so less guilt inducing..). Expensive though so I can’t get them very often, they were from ‘Grind’ grind.co.uk

Alternatively the Lidl ones are nice, much cheaper but equally as not eco-friendly as the Nespresso ones.

If you haven’t got your machine yet though there are often offers on the Nespresso site where you get the machine for £1 with a years subscription to pods, it means overall the pods which you would have bought anyway are loads cheaper if you cancel out the money you would have spent on a machine.

I use Rave (biodegradable) or L'or when on offer as well as the originals. Depends who has the best deal on.

https://www.crukafe.com are my choice for use in a nespresso machine. No idea how they compare for cost, the coffee is terrific.

Sewingsusan · 30/09/2021 17:08

Thanks all.
Does anyone have this machine? Can you use generic pods on it?

We have the same machine and use the generic Sainsbury’s pods and the Starbucks ones.

FinallyHere · 30/09/2021 19:11

@Sewingsusan that is very similar to the machine we have, Krups brand.

They take nespresso type pods. No mess.

Sewingsusan · 01/10/2021 10:49

Thank you all so much. Saved me from buying a vertuo which would’ve cost a fortune in pods.
