Most massivest, hugest, ginormousest tampon recommendations!

I've hit middle age, and my periods have changed. So much so that I have 2 days where I soak out of a huge mooncup and a massive pad overnight, and additionally, I have to sleep with a bath towel between my legs.

(Having just written that down, it's quite crap, isn't it? FWIW, I can't take hormonal contraception, and
tranexamic acid did nothing for me. I do take iron tablets though!)

Is there some sort of mega-jumbo tampon (over and above Tampax super plus), that would get me through the night? Something for elephants, perhaps?

Lilets Ultra are worth a try.

They banned super tampons in the 80s because of TSS. So today’s “super” (which was only regular in the 1980s), is as big as you can safely get and use.

Mischance · 29/09/2021 22:23

I used to use two supers at once plus huge towel - still used to soak the bed.

A hysterectomy is the answer. It brought me great joy.

Would period pants with your mooncup and pad and towel be an extra line if defence?

parietal · 29/09/2021 22:25

lilets ultra. it sounds weird, but try to push them in so they are oriented somehow sideways, not longways. otherwise the gushing just comes down the sides & misses the tampon in the middle.

mrsfollowill · 29/09/2021 22:27

Goodness you sound worse than me! I Use a superplus tampax at night plus 2 huge pads (end to end to create a superlong pad I swear it's nearly up to my waist but there is an overlap zone) and then normally wake up twice a night and change the lot. I only go to bed at midnight generally as well and get up at 6.30 am. Peri menopause is shit Grin sorry cannot suggest some miracle but I'll be looking out to see if someone else has the answer!

ZednotZee · 29/09/2021 22:27

@parietal

Sideways? Is the width not painful?

Mykittensmittens · 29/09/2021 22:28

I have similar issues.

I wear the modibodi 24hr ultra pant, and then on top wear a heavy flow bamboo pad. I inevitably wake up about 3 hours in to sleep, just take out the reusable pad then go the rest of the night in the pants.

For context a regular pad/tampon would be soaked in 1.5hrs in the daytime.

It’s a good combo for me. Couldn’t do it in the day as it feels too ‘nappy’ but at night it works well.

RandomMess · 29/09/2021 22:30

Start the ball rolling to have womb ablation!

Bobbybobbins · 29/09/2021 22:30

I have a super plus tampon, a night pad and have just bought period pants too to mainly use overnight.

Scotstar91 · 29/09/2021 22:31

Oh wow! There's some stuff to explore there! Thank you!

Appreciate the TSS risks, so am super conscious of that.

I have a cold at the moment and everytime I cough, I gush. Its really upsetting actually. Like I can't control myself unless I'm sorting my protection out every hour. FFS :-(

I was like you until I got a mirena, now I barely get periods, just spotting really

CommanderBurnham · 29/09/2021 22:35

Don't think you need to suffer this. As PP said you have surgical options if you've decided to not have any more children.

Tranexamic acid is working for me at the moment thank goodness but I can't work on my heavy days otherwise.

clericalerrors · 29/09/2021 22:35

Perimenopause is shit isn't it!

Asda own brand super plus extra are not bad. The lilets ultra are slightly better, but the Asda ones are only 80p a pack, when you're changing every hour it works out expensive using branded ones.

I also do 2 nighttime towels, and sleep on a bath towel. I find I wake up about every 2 hours during the night to change tampon/towel/ clothes.

Tranexamic acid works for me but my GP is reluctant to prescribe it, their solution is the coil, which I don't want (and I'd have to wait 6 weeks to have it fitted anyway, and 8-12 weeks to have it removed if it doesn't help!)

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 29/09/2021 23:04

Consider a Mirena.

BadgertheBodger · 29/09/2021 23:07

What about a big fat brick of a maternity pad inside some period knickers?

NotMyCat · 29/09/2021 23:10

Not tampons but I have awful flooding periods and I have never ever leaked with these
They are massive!

NotMyCat · 29/09/2021 23:11

And yes even with gushing (where you sneeze and cross your legs!)

Skinnyankles · 29/09/2021 23:12

Big fat incontinence pads (aldi do good ones for wee incontinence) . I bought them in error one as they look like a pad but are much bigger - however they are the best things ever and always buy them for night time wear now.

beckymum · 30/09/2021 22:49

I had an ablation it was amazing. Now just spotting for a day or two.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 01/10/2021 02:31

Did you read that ibuprofen can reduce flow? I read that on MN. You have to keep taking it but it did work when I tried it. Maybe take at night and see if helps?

MinimumChips · 01/10/2021 03:26

I take ibuprofen to reduce flow on the recommendation of my GP and it’s fairly effective - makes it more like it was pre-dc2. Have you considered an ablation (if you’ve finished having children)? Some women say it was life changing.

Nobranothanks · 01/10/2021 06:30

I have a copper coil and for 24 hours I bleed very very heavily. Lilets Ultra have been a game changer for me. I use one of those with a a big sanitary towel overnight and don't seem to leak.

72WayTooCool · 01/10/2021 07:13

Before I had my hysterectomy I used the big fat cheap Kotex pads, two end to end with an overlap. It was the only way I could get through the night. Tampons just got soaked in half an hour. Reusable pads were quite good too and you can get some nice soft fat ones.

I would also encourage you to speak to you GP if the bleeding really impacts your life. I eventually did, and after a scan, a hysteroscopy and a biopsy, it turned out I had endometrial cancer at the age of 48. I don't want to scare you, but I naively assumed heavy bleeding was par for the course, which of course it can be. But if it's not normal for you do get checked out. Btw, I'm fine now. Cancer was caught early, I had a hysterectomy and I am cancer free.
