After 19 months of the rollercoaster ride it's finished. Will employers keep staff on it's going to be all over the media if they don't

My mum's (small) company have made them all redundant last week. They've been on furlough since the beginning.

ShaneTheThird · 29/09/2021 21:34

I'm wondering the same. I'm still furloughed from my original job of 6 years. They have given me one shift next month...

WinoAnon · 29/09/2021 21:36

I was really surprised to read there were so many still on furlough. What fields of work is this? I can't think of a sector that isn't absolutely rammed at the moment.

WinoAnon · 29/09/2021 21:38

Sorry for your shitty situation pps. There's never a good time but this feels shitty.

I'd think quite a few arts and theatre workers would still be furloughed. Travel wont be back at full rates. So anyone involved in international travel - travel agents, airport workers, and lots more I cant think of.
BettyOBarley · 29/09/2021 21:59

My mum's industry is in-house catering.
Everyone still WFH, so no one to cater for!

Ploorfuzzle · 29/09/2021 22:01

It won't be all over the media if they don't, many will be small businesses that sadly people aren't usually that arsed about. It is really sad for those industries that haven't recovered yet, but aside from travel which will probably pick up even further, a line has to be drawn somewhere, and as some things such as wfh have changed forever, businesses that rely on that won't be doing any better a year from now either.

justasking111 · 29/09/2021 22:16

Friends mother works for a Bank she and a colleague had to set up a team to investigate home working staff for productivity. Computer usage being one. Those results being sent upstairs for the bosses to decide who is for the chop. It's bloody depressing work

@PeonyTime I’m an airport worker for an airline and as from the 1st October we are all back to our normal full rate of pay. Same aa most airlines. Travel has picked up loads.

WinoAnon · 30/09/2021 00:19

@PeonyTime hadn't thought of those areas but hopefully they will have picked up enough over the summer to deal with it. I'm in a location with a lot of tourist so a bit blinkered, it's just been so crazy busy here I couldn't imagine how anyone could be on furlough.

I agree it will probably be small businesses where the financial blow has just been deferred who will feel the brunt.

Lots of bars, shops, cafes in my local town have vacancies. Some have signs saying closed due to no staff as well as vacancy notices.

I think too many as settled in the furlough mode. Time to get back to work

dreamingbohemian · 30/09/2021 08:52

My husband works in food retail, they are crying out for staff but have resisted raising wages because they're convinced that when furlough ends they'll be flooded with applicants. We'll see!

tiggerwhocamefortea · 30/09/2021 08:59

Most arts and theatre I know is back on - I work in the west end a lot and theatres are open so personally I think Covid is not impacting those employers now it has been their specific business decision and has "suited" them for some reason not to re start

^Same where I live. Hospitality sector is crying out for staff.

BasiliskStare · 30/09/2021 13:46

@justasking111 I agree that is depressing - however if people think working from home is 1/2 a holiday - well. ( not saying those people do )
It could speak to attitude . But if they got through all the work given to them - different matter

BobLemon · 30/09/2021 13:48

Hopefully getting their HGV licences and learning to pluck turkeys Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 30/09/2021 13:48

We have loads of leisure work vacancies round here too. One cafe/bar that has had to open up daytime only because they can't get a chef for the evening shift.

All sorts of alternative decisions being made by many people across the wider industry. It will take a while to even out, I imagine!

That's not true. My daughter works at a West End Theatre and whilst her theatre is open, several are still not. The changing of the isolation rules are what has just now begun to allow theatres to re-open. My daughter's theatre opened at the end of July, did 7 days then had to close for 10 days because one cast member caught covid. This was not financially viable for many venues.

Anyone working in anything to do with children's activities is still having a tough time too. Participation numbers are down partly due to parental fears and partly due to the fact that children are having to "catch up" from the school missed and so are not attending as many activities.
