I may be forced into getting one due an error by a company supply me with a door, they forgot the letter plate.

How are they safe! I only have a narrow bit of brick to try end get one in also!

I imagine they are screwed in from the inside so that there is no access to the screws to get them off the wall unless you have a key to open the box.

A would be thief could, in theory, crowbar the front open but I don’t imagine it would be worth the risk of being seen in broad daylight to nick a few bills. Most people wouldn’t have much of value that fits through a letter slot, or have mail sitting around over night very often for a thief to act under cover of darkness.

If the company have made an error will they not put that error right & get you a door with a slot?

Choice4567 · 29/09/2021 12:13

I can’t imagine it would be worth the effort; what would people be after by taking a letter box?

Why should you go to the expense of a letter box you dont want because a company hasn't fulfilled an order correctly?

Fuck that, you ordered a door with a letter box you should get a door with a letter box and if they can't supply that they need to refund you.
If you paid on credit card this should be pretty simple if they decide not to play ball.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 29/09/2021 12:24

We've got one on our wall, it doesn't lock or anything.

I have literally never given any thought to someone stealing it or the contents!

Caspianberg · 29/09/2021 12:28

You wall mount them from the open door and can then lock the door if your worried.

It’s a better idea. Letter boxes in doors are one of the biggest heat loss areas in your house ( letting heat out and cold in)

purplecorkheart · 29/09/2021 12:30

Neighbour has one that I empty when they are away. It is very secure. Fitted from inside. The slot is narrow so no one is able to put their hand in and the post seems to stand at the back so would be hard to put something in to pull post out.

FlorenceWintle · 29/09/2021 12:31

Why would someone want to pinch your letter box?

They’re not great though, most are very small and don’t fit much in so you’ll forever have the postie knocking on your door. Better to pursue the door company for the mistake, as someone else said!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 29/09/2021 12:48

Tell the door company to make the door you ordered.
Alternatively.if you ordered the wrong door, an external one is fine. I mean there really should be chuff all post anyway if you have online accounts.

Autumngoldleaf · 29/09/2021 14:11

It's also a window I have paid for half so far (on credit card) and half on completion

Shame as they are really nice and guys but I've had lots of issues and now this.

Your credit card should cover you. Personally I’d tell them either supply what was asked for or refund. If they refuse call your CC and do a chargeback.
Ariela · 29/09/2021 14:30

Definitely they supply and fit what was ordered!
If not you're covered by your credit card: get in touch with them.

TheWoleb · 29/09/2021 14:32

They need to supple what you ordered or refund you. It doesnt matter if they are "nice guys" or not.
Just tell them to refund or supply what was ordered.

On the letterbox thing though... who is it who is trying to steal your mail? I've never ever heard of anyone having their letterbox ripped off their wall. I've also never lived in a house without one and never once had post stolen.

Are you often anxious?

Autumngoldleaf · 29/09/2021 16:30

They said now they have found one to fit the tiny space at the bottom of the door but it's only going to be 5cm not 7cm

Autumngoldleaf · 29/09/2021 16:34

The woleb,

What a strange comment.
You said you've never known anyone had their letter box ripped off their wall.
I have never known anyone with a letter box on their wall? I've never come across it so I'm doing a little what's called "due dilligence" before going to extra effort to faff around with it.
However, I do know that identity stealing is big business as is people rifling through bins to find personal details.
Hence why I'm asking about the safety of wall mounted boxes and in my situation this would also be in quite an exposed place on a busy pavement.

AdobeWanKenobi · 29/09/2021 16:49

Are you often anxious?

Are you often so blasé about security?

These things are metal and can be weighed in for scrap so wouldn’t be unheard of to take them. Then let’s factor in identity theft and people having mail fished out of these kinds of boxes.

Or were you just trying to put the OP down a bit for raising what is a pretty sensible question.l?

I wouldn't have one fitted at floor level. It's easier for someone to nick stuff that's been left on your doormat. Why can't it be fitted higher up? If it ruins the door, that's a bit tough for the installer - they'll have to replace it.
Sheldock · 29/09/2021 17:09

My neighbour has a wall mounted letter box. They've never had an issue, but then again, we are tucked away in a back corner so it's not visible from the main street.

A 5cm letter box would be tiny and contents would always get squashed or folded.

Autumngoldleaf · 29/09/2021 20:16

I measured some bulky mail and that came to 3. 5 cm so I don't think 5 is too too bad.

Gladioli23 · 29/09/2021 21:02

Having been a person who puts envelopes through doors, a narrow letterbox generally means you struggle to push the post through as you have to hold the letterbox open with your hand while you push it through. So I think a very narrow letterbox would risk lots of your letters getting ruined. This doesn't so much apply to the wall ones as they don't have a sprung slot.
