Had medical advice but....

Hi all

I wanted to start by saying i have had medical advice so not being foolish.

For the past year almost I have started getting really bad migraines almost weekly, sometimes only every 2 weeks or monthly.

The thing is they start at night every time. They wake me up and I feel hungover. I'm then waking on and off during the night in pain. When I get up for the day its still there and when I stand it feels like an intense throbbing pain and I can hear it in my ears. Does that make sense. I have it all day as a constant pain and I feel sick. When I bend or move I get that throbbing noise pain again. Sometimes these migraines can last a couple of days. Getting worse again at night.

I was given amatriptaline for them a few months ago but it has a sedative side affect and I have disabled children so need to be alert in the night. I gave up trying anything else because I was too busy to spend hours trying to get a doctor's appointment.

We have a carbon monoxide alarm.
I do wear glasses for driving but not close up work.
I work on a computer but not continuously.
I'm not dehydrated.

Does anyone have any idea why or how these are starting. Its strange to me that its at night every time. Il be fast asleep and turn over and there it is. Its not there when I go to bed. Could it be my pillow? Could it be next doors smoke that literally stinks my house out. They are chain smokers and horders who smoke in the rooms next to ours and as a consequence our house smells. Not much I can do about that. Has anyone had similar and found a cause or cure.

What was diagnosed when you were prescribed amitriptyline? What tests have been done? Have you had an MRI of the head and neck etc..

Cervicogenic headaches often peak when lying down (aka overnight). A sinus headache will often be worse when leaning over. Where is the pain situated?

I would go back to GP and request further investigation, perhaps a referral to a headache clinic or neurology if this has not already been done. There are other options that amitryptilone for chronic pain but I would try and get more specific diagnosis first.

I suffer with chronic migraines and find gel packs kept in the fridge a godsend, wrap one around the back of the neck and one against the forehead, they're very cheap.

Sounds a bit like hypnic headache but doesn't quite fit. But you could try the coffee treatment anyway, see if it helps?

Hi OP, I had this and it was hormonal - started hrt for peri menopause and the headaches stopped.
The other thing that helped a bit was getting a mouth guard to wear at night - I had been clenching my teeth so hard it was causing head and neck pain.
I really feel for you - it’s miserable.

To counteract the smoke from next door l, try an air purifier. Here is one I bought for our bedroom as I get hay fever and it’s brilliant.

There are many other models/brands at different prices to suit all budgets.

My migraine pattern started with me waking up with them.
Some of the drugs used for migraine only work if you take them when you first feel them coming on.
I currently take Sumatriptan, which you can take at any time. Problem with that is if it doesn't clear with two (spaced out doses) its not going to. Avoid opiate painkillers to treat it, as it may make the initial migraine better it can actually make them last longer (I don't understand the science I'm afraid).
I was referred to a neurologist. They told me to avoid 'C's' so caffeine, chocolate, cheese, claret (alcohol in general) infact a whole list of things.
I now take a preventative (a drug usually used in treating epilepsy). It has certainly reduced the amount of migraines I have.
It could be that you are jaw clenching in your sleep. If you are stressed etc this has a massive affect. Try a mouth guard.
