Talk to me about under active thyroid and tiredness

Long time lurker occasional poster.

Over the last couple of months I’ve been feeling so so tired and fatigued and having heart palpitations on and off. ECG clear
I’ve just requested online access so I can see all my blood test results.

From the blood tests I had last month the only thing that came back borderline was my thyroid panel. TSH was 5.0 (range27-4.5) and my T4 was 16(range 11-23). No treatment just advised to get it retested in 3 months.

Is this under active? Is there anything I can do to boost it naturally?

It looks like my ferritin is on the low side 22.8
(range 20-130) and folate is 3.6 (range 2-18)
I’m not sure what folate is. I’m taking high strength Vitamin D tablets daily too.

My hairs falling out, I’m always cold and just feel exhausted despite 8 hours sleep, water and a healthy ish diet.

I have quite a demanding job that involves evening shifts and I’m tired by 5pm! Surely it’s not normal to feel this tired at 30 years old? ( not peri menopausal, or pregnant).

I've very likely got an under active thyroid. I'm literally too tired to type out why as I've got Covid now

But I was supposed to be having blood tests today that have now been rearranged until I'm Covid free (and an ECG - no idea why)

I've started (illegally Grin) taking thyroxine as I couldn't take any more waiting and being ill - I'm on HRT and I'm still not sleeping more than 5 hours a night - and I'm totally exhausted

So next week I will find out what my antibody and tsh level are

Can I jump on and ask @Sugarbellaella how much Levo you take and how much or that tablet(s) you take?

I had to fight to be put on Levo and was given 50mg despite NICE saying you should be on 1.6mg per Kilo you weigh - now on 75 after having to fight for more and still feel awful!

If you can go private @CapitanSandy I'd recommend it!

@YetAnotherWalk I take 100 at the moment but have been on 125 in the past. I also take one or two metavive a day. When I could get NDT i would take 3 grains of Thyroid S. Having blood tests next week but feel ok at the moment

Sideorderofchips · 15/02/2022 14:37

I have hashimotos disease or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. My anti body level was 431 when diagnosed. The tiredness is beyond oh I didn't sleep well into a bone aching tiredness to your core

I’m baffled by it all to be honest. So sorry to hear all your stories of having to battle to be treated or get the right dose of medication. I naively thought it looked like an obvious under active thyroid and treatment would follow. I’d be lost without this thread!Flowers

Please don't give up OP. Ask to speak to a different GP and say you're not happy to wait 6 months. Explain it's affecting your life. Print off a list of symptoms and tick off those ones you have then list them to the Dr. Ask for thyroid antibodies to be checked - this could be the missing piece of jigsaw. Then ask for a trial small dose of Levothyroxine to see if you feel better then test bloods in 3 months. Be very assertive about this. You are having to live with the symptoms. Good luck OP.

Thanks @Sugarbellaella

Whatliesbeneath707 · 16/02/2022 07:39

@Sugarbellaella did you used to take NDT - was it prescribed or self purchased? Wink
I did lots of research & took Thyroid S for several years - felt lots better on it. Now unable to get it since Covid happened.

GP & NHS Consultant were very scathing about me taking it.

Sugarbellaella · 16/02/2022 22:53

@Whatliesbeneath707 it was self purchased. I haven’t looked for it for about 6 months but would like to give it another go. It’s just been impossible to get hold of or crazily expensive. I need a trip to Thailand to stock up! I never told my GP I was on it and just told them I was getting private prescriptions for thyroxine so they didn’t need to prescribe it.

Just in case anyone wants to buy levothyroxine online I got it from simple online pharmacy
