Talk to me about after school snacks

My children seem to be hungrier and hungrier every day after school and are eating more and more crap which obviously I don’t want
I’ve moved dinner time earlier which does seem to be helping but particularly the little 2 don’t really understand that food will be coming in an hour/hour and a half and you don’t need to fill up on lots of different things as soon as you get home
None of them like anything particularly ‘protein’y which is a problem as they seem to be mainlining carbs which obviously does next to nothing in keeping them going

What do you usually do for after school snacks?

We eat dinner as a family not earlier than 6.45pm/7pm so after school DD needed a decent snack.

plain yoghurt with oats and fruit
cereals
crumpets with butter
small sandwich (one slice) with ham and some fruit

I never understood the idea of a savoury meal at 4.30pm and then cereals or toast at bedtime.

DietCokeChipsAndMayo there are a lot of disordered eaters on mumsnet, for whom your username is probably a trigger! It’s not really the best place to ask for food advice because someone will always pop up to say that jam on toast is no different to feeding your child pure sugar.

RiverSkater · 28/09/2021 19:49

Rice cakes, bread sticks, pitta bread fingers, crackers, half a bagel. Enough to keep them going.

Tea served at 4.30/5.00.

Following for inspiration

“I do tend to fall back on cheese and processed meats as snacks for the diabetic one, which I know isn’t very good but I struggle with what else to give her that is carb free “

Non UPF meat? A meal for my T1 usually looks like this.

Roasted chicken breasts with butter, herbs & garlic with a side of low GI salad topped with (weak) white wine vinegar, EV olive oil & avocado dressing.

A snack is usually tuna with vinegar/oil & pepper with low glycemic index vegetables. Sometimes she eats a small jar (120g) of olives just on their own. Low GI vegetables with peanut butter to dip. She eats piccobella tomatoes like they’re sweets, and peppers like a bunny. The GI of those are low.. I know not everyone’s 9 year olds are going to like those things but the trick is to change it while they’re still young, before they get used to it and it gets out of control (frubes, constant processed cheese, UPF meat like turkey twizzlers and KFC, dairylea dunkers and lunchables, UPF carbs such as white bread and pasta, crisps, muffins, biscuits etc.

crazyguineapiglady · 28/09/2021 20:31

Celery is delicious with peanut butter spread inside it.

NotMyCat · 28/09/2021 20:35

I usually have an afternoon snack as my lunch is at 11.30

Rice cakes (I have the marmite ones) with cottage cheese or cream cheese and sweet chilli sauce or egg mayo on top
Flatbread and hummus
Apple or banana and PB
Greek yoghurt with berries
Greek yoghurt with PB and banana
Boiled eggs on their own
Babybel or marmite cheese

DietCokeChipsAndMayo · 28/09/2021 20:51

BeepyBoop I didn’t mean she only eats processed meats, mealtimes are fine and not full of turkey twizzlers and kfc! I just meant snack wise there’s a little box in the fridge with ‘freebies’ in like babybels & fridge raiders, my children all do eat a lot of raw veg (they actually prefer it over fruit) but a snack of just veg isn’t much of a snack is it, tuna is a good idea though, she loves a tuna sandwich or tuna pasta, I’d never even considered giving it alone as a snack

Everyone seems to eat a lot of peanut butter, are we the only family that don’t like it? 🤔

I don’t like it either, nor do my children. DH has the ‘whole earth’ 100% peanut one but he’s the only one in the house who eats it.

I pick up at either 4.30 or 4.45 and then we have a 30 min drive home.

I do the following (for the car) - their lunch is at noon and no afternoon break;

  • chicken nugget happy meals on Fridays
-muffins (currently raspberry and vanilla, homemade) -cucumber and cream cheese wraps

I aim to fill the void but not fill them up.

Then we have dinner at 6.30.

MakkaPakkas · 28/09/2021 21:29

Old fashioned but when I was a kid my mum always had a big pan of soup on the go. If hungry we could have a bowl of that.
My kids get fruit if it's me, or stuff from the corner shop if it's their dad (jerky, cheese twist, 'nice fruit', drink or something like that.)

Snoopsnoggysnog · 28/09/2021 21:46

Re peanut butter, I eat it every day on whole meal toast for breakfast. No one else in the house likes it. I buy the whole earth or meridian ones, they are 100% peanuts, no sugar and no palm oil.

reluctantbrit · 28/09/2021 22:27

@DietCokeChipsAndMayo - Peanut butter is evil in our house, just below Marmite.

WeAllHaveWings · 28/09/2021 22:32

Ds always had a huge glass of water when he gets in as most of the hunger is actually thirst. Then has a small snack similar to the ideas given.

Whatamoraldilema · 28/09/2021 22:56

Oh goodness you are all so healthy. Mine have a couple of biscuits, bit of chocolate, banana loaf kinda thing or small packet of crisps and hopefully some fruit on the side. We don't routinely have puddings though.

bellsbuss · 28/09/2021 23:02

At the start of the week it's normally something healthy like bread sticks , cheese cubes , grapes , crumpets , homemade smoothie. Come Thursday and Friday it's a chocolate biscuit or packet of crisps , I can't get too worked up other it.

bellsbuss · 28/09/2021 23:03

Over

SeaToSki · 28/09/2021 23:16

Mine were offered 1 piece of wholemeal toast and butter, milk and carrots sticks. If they were hungry and all the carrots in the house were eaten then I would consider other options. We got through a lot of carrots, but it was inexpensive and healthy and meant I didnt need to fuss too much about vegetable consumption at dinner (win) Having a blanket policy helped with the whining and then once in a while (once a term ish) we would have a special treat and have cake after school…. The excitement was palpable 🤣

Seriallover · 28/09/2021 23:30

Mines has dinner at 5pm, so a snack would be one Yoyo (fruit) oat bar or iced gems.

GTAlogic · 28/09/2021 23:44

Mine finish off what they didn't have for dinner, then maybe get some sweets or a packet of crisps before their tea at 5-6 ish.

5BlackDoors · 29/09/2021 12:33

So this thread inspired me and I have collected together a little stash of in the car snacks for the return home;

-cocktail sausages
-breadsticks and dippy cheese
-carrot sticks and hummus
-boiled eggs with yolks removed for fussy DS1
-breadsticks and a different flavoured hummus
-little chicken katsu bites

Hope they are tidy eaters! Mine would have had that lot all over their uniform and the backseat!

For ds I would give a drink of chilled water and he would get something when he got home. Sometimes he wouldn't need anything as he had been mostly thirsty.

5BlackDoors · 29/09/2021 13:00

Not so much tidy eaters as a messy car! Grin

DH calls my car the wheelie bin.

Which is unfair as I actually clean it out and vacuum it every Monday morning.

kayde12 · 29/09/2021 13:15

Crackers and cheese
Toast and jam
Nutella on toast

Fruit/ apples/grapes / banana/ berries
