Pet insurance up by £11

Hi we have a cat who is now 16. No conditions no injuries no claims. Insurance has gone from 18.35 to 29.69 this renewal - any recommendations? We have life time cover but not many frilly bits.

We just switched to bought by many after seeing them recommended on here. Pet plan had hiked up the renewal and BBM actually have given us a higher cover limit for £13 less a month.

I think that’s quite reasonable for a 16 year old cat.

I’d definitely advise against changing insurance companies with pet insurance unless you really need to. The new insurer will not cover anything ‘pre existing’ (even if you never claimed for it on your past insurance, it will still be in your animals’ medical notes) and that can be quite a wide definition, I.e. it can mean if your dog saw the vet for vomiting in 2019, they might apply an exclusion for ‘gastrointestinal issues or any condition presenting with vomiting’.

Ah interesting, I think she was seen once for losing a bit of hair and they found nothing, just suggested stress. But it would be in her notes I guess.

We are with Bought By Many and (if you can navigate their somewhat bizarre website) could not recommend them highly enough.

and that's the gamble of insurance!

Oh for sure @twinmum86 and you and others will have done well from insurance and got services and treatments worth more than you paid for. A lifesaver for some.
But insurance companies are huge money making industries; and are only so because most people do not get back what they put in.

I'll continue the gamble... if I lose, I lose! 🤷‍♀️

twinmum86 · 29/09/2021 09:20

@LowbrowVictoriana yes!
I think if we had enough savings to not have to worry about paying for treatment then we probably wouldn't have insurance and just take the risk!

That isn’t great advice for pet insurance. If your pets has had any problems and you move insurance company they will not cover anything that it has been seen for before because it will be classed as a pew existing condition.

There are a couple of companies that cover pre existing conditions but with many caveats that mean it usually isn’t worth it.

Pet insurance is not like car or house insurance[/quote]
How can looking at a comparison site ever be the wrong thing to do @Fbawtft?

Maybe you've misunderstood that you don't have to change your insurer just because you look for the best deal.

The OP says her pet has no conditions and I was also quite clear that you chose the best deal for your circumstances and if your current insurer is the best you stay with them in the knowledge that you have properly looked into it. That can't possibly be bad advice.
