Did your parents ever make you watch anything inappropriate for your age?

Not porn obviously. But anything like horror movies or anything else?

Wasn't made to watch it I loved it. It's only now I'm older and re watching that I realise how inappropriate Gimmie gimme gimme was for a child. I just loved her hair. My dad is a terrible dad and we haven't spoken for 2 years so says allt

RampantIvy · 28/09/2021 08:12

No, never. I remember my mum being horrified that the school set us The Lord of the Flies to read when I was in my second year at high school (year 8 these days).

TartanDMs · 28/09/2021 08:13

I lived with my nan on and off, she loved horror films and Carry On films so they were our staples - horror films at night in bed. I had my own room but preferred to share her bed because it was bigger and she had the telly (even though it was black and white) so from being very tiny (maybe 6 or so) we would put something creepy on at bedtime. I don't really find horror films scary now.

Bowtie292 · 28/09/2021 08:35

PieMistee how did you watch the whole of the Omen by mistake? Did they not switch off when they realised what it was or were you watching it alone?

Bowtie292 · 28/09/2021 08:36

We were allowed to watch ALL the horror films from from age 13+. We loved them but I cant imagine that happening now with DS who's 13 and his mates.

Magicalwoodlands · 28/09/2021 08:38

Twin Peaks! I was only about eight and it went over my head but it really unsettled my 10 year old brother.

magicstar1 · 28/09/2021 08:41

No, we had no horror movies….I managed to catch the odd Cagney & Lacey but if my mother thought it was an explicit episode she’d suddenly remember I was to go to bed lol.
My dad made me watch a couple of movies about fires as a warning, and it gave me a healthy respect for fire, and an instinct to always check for fire escapes etc.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/09/2021 08:43

My DF rented Animal Farm for my sister & I when we were about 6/7. We chose the video as we thought it was a cartoon.
Didn't quite pan out as we all expected, Boxer going off to the glue factory & the sheepdog puppies growing up evil is emblazoned on my mind.
Similar with Watership Down & the burrows scene and more.

VitalsStable · 28/09/2021 08:44

When I was 4 we got our first VHS machine and all day round eagerly to watch the first video my dad got to play on it.

It was Rambo.

To be fair he's a shite father in so many respects that this pales into insignificance!

AnotherName456 · 28/09/2021 08:46

So many. Alien and Aliens, Terminator, American werewolf in London, Amytville Horror. I used to have nightmares from the chest bursting scene.

My parents were very strict but I was allowed to watch anything.

BiBabbles · 28/09/2021 08:46

Yes. I can remember my mother laughing as I buried my face in the couch during a Jason movie when I was 7ish, I had nightmares about Freddy Krueger when I was 5 or 6, she would often watch Beavis and Butthead and similar, and many of her American daytime soap operas had really not-for-kids storylines. She generally had the idea that after lunch, the TV was hers and she'd watch what she wanted.

Mommabear20 · 28/09/2021 08:47

My uncle (has no children of his own so apparently didn't know what was age appropriate) put the mummy in when I was 5, had nightmares about scarab beetles crawling under my skin for years!

Worldgonecrazy · 28/09/2021 08:50

The Young Ones. No horror films as I don’t like them, but plenty of anarchic and disrespectful to authority type comedy.

I read watership down when I was very young and was surprised that my school thought it a suitable film to show at end of term.

I remember many of my friends being disappointed by’The Elephant Man’ as it’s not a horror film. Personally I thought it was very horrifying showing human nature, and real monsters. Same with ‘The Devils”

bubblebath62636 · 28/09/2021 08:51

I wasn't 'made' to, I just happened to watch the odd horror movie when I couldn't sleep at night etc. Mum was a single parent so was probably too exhausted to notice! This was from secondary school age though.

Beenheresincethebook · 28/09/2021 08:53

Full monty when I was about 11. Very strange considering they were SO strict about everything else in life including films/tv Hmm

Noshowwithoutpunch · 28/09/2021 09:16

I remember going to the local independent local video store when I was around 14 and selecting the newly released Reservoir dogs.
The woman who owned the shop queried my choice but my Mum who was browsing another section said it was absolutely fine and could select any I wanted.
The next week I selected The Omen.

I'd never allow my children in that shop if it still existed today. The main section was a wall full of porn surrounded by pictures of bondage/sex toys. It was grim.

MegaClutterSlut · 28/09/2021 10:14

God yes, my mum was always putting on horror films like freddie krueger, chucky, pretty much all of them. It was the only thing that kept quiet and glued to our spots. None of us had nightmares surprisingly

Iggly · 28/09/2021 10:15

Made? I wasn’t forced no, but probably did watch inappropriate stuff I’m sure.

JustAReflektor · 28/09/2021 10:21

No but I did have a friend who often had sleepovers and her parents thought it was ok to go out for the evening and leave her 15/16 year old brother in charge.

We were 11/12. He would always give us horror films to watch, and spirits to drink.

LookAtMoiPloise · 28/09/2021 10:22

I wasn't 'made' to, but was allowed to.

I grew up on horror films; i'm not scarred for life, just love them now!

x2boys · 28/09/2021 10:29

@TheQueef

Threads. Fucking cheery bunch the Nuns at school though not parents. Was punted as factual too.
I remember watching that in the 80,s it terrified me for years I was never made to watch anything, but in the 80,s most families had one Tv and there were no dedicated channels, si i watched loads of things my parents had on that were probably not age appropriate, Tenko, The singing Detective etc.

Haha I most definitely am scarred for life!

I hide behind a cushion for doctor who 😊

Loyaultemelie · 28/09/2021 13:06

My parents were fairly relaxed and we watched Monty Python and some of the Halloween type things from around 9/10. I do remember seeing Candyman at a sleepover at 11 though and it gave me nightmares when nothing before (or after!) did Confused

MargaretThursday · 28/09/2021 13:42

@cricketmum84

Not parents but at school!

I was year 9 so age 13. We had a treat movie day at the end of term and the teacher put on The Amytville Horror!!!! I had nightmares for weeks.

We saw "Mississippi Burning" in year 10, I think. It's an 18. Still occasionally get flashbacks.

Having said that, I am ridiculously sensitive to films and rarely choose to watch anything scarier than the A-team (which now is a 15 btw!) and even some of those I struggle with.

Interestingly I don't have the same problem with books. I read an autobiography of someone who had been in a concentration camp because of hiding Jews when I was about 6 or 7 (got on the wrong bookshelf at home, dm was horrified when I came to ask her about it). I've seen it fairly recently, and it's quite graphic, but actually my memories of the book are times when people are nice to her. It did make me cry though.

NotSoNewAndShiny · 28/09/2021 13:47

We were never made to. We were barely allowed to watch stuff they deemed as bad influence even if they were for kids.

But we managed to watch a lot of horror movies and inappropriate stuff when they weren't home and at friends' houses.
