Toddler vomiting at night

Okay so, I am going to take him to the doctors but would love to know if anyone’s been through this…
My son is 3 and has recently been vomiting in his sleep, he is fine during the day, playing, eating and drinking normally, no symptoms at all and the. All of a sudden when he’s asleep he will just vomit😩 he does wake up and it’s awful for him and us!

He did have a mpa as a baby but we went through the ladder and have had no problems since around 1 year old, he isn’t eating or drinking anything out of the ordinary so I just can’t understand what’s happening!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Does he have habit of sucking fingers at all? Could be making himself sick by gag reflex?

Kgooch96 · 27/09/2021 23:13

@Akire thank you for your reply!
He doesn’t no! He used to have a dummy but that’s been gone for months! He’s just literally sleeping soundly and then it all just comes out, no gagging or anything before hand!

Does he have milk just before bed? If yes, I'd stop that for a while and see if it helps.

DD is allergic to eggs but her reaction is a bit unusual in that it is delayed. First couple of hours she seems fine, then about 3-4 hours after, with no warning and no wretching, she pukes.

It was a delightful few months trying to work out the cause of the seemingly random vomit episodes here Envy

Worth also trying pillow under mattress try prop them up slightly to see if it helps. Keep food diary see if is a pattern. GP most likely suggest that for time being of all else is well.

Kgooch96 · 28/09/2021 07:38

I’m going to keep a food diary and see if there is a pattern! He was sick again last night 😭 my gp is an absolute nightmare so I’m going to keep an eye on it and keep a good diary over the next week and then take him to see the gp full of evidence otherwise I won’t get anywhere!

He doesn’t have milk before bed but I think it’s either acid reflux or an allergy so I’m going to prop him up and keep a good diary and just hope for the best!

Thank you guys!

@Kgooch96 Just wondering if you got to the bottom of this at all? My 4 year old DD has done this three times this week but is otherwise fine, she doesn't usually even remember in the morning that she was sick.

Hi I’m going through the exact same thing with my 4 year old. She has recently had two vomiting bugs quite close to each other and I’m not sure whether she has developed bad reflux or it has become a learnt behaviour. The nights that I give her gaviscon she has not been sick but I don’t want to be giving her that every night. Having meals is becoming more difficult. Saying she is full after 3-4 bites and needing a rest. You can see that she is uncomfortable. Sometimes when she wakes in the night she grabs the bowl, forcing a yawn as if trying to make herself sick, but then sometimes I’ve been able to distract her and talk her out of it. I think I just need someone to tell me it’s just a phase and she’ll grow out of it. Think I might still take her back to the doctors though.

Had this when DD1 was that age, she also did it if she'd been running around and got a bit hot and bothered. My doctor wasn't concerned said perhaps she was getting a bit overheated, and tbh she was one of these toddlers who sweat quite a bit at night or when she was running around. It lasted a few months and worried me to death, but she was otherwise healthy and it disappeared on its own.

Had the same with DD2 but it lasted on and off for a few years. Once again doctor not worried as she was otherwise fine. Think she was about 8 when that stopped, she's 11 now. Like her big sister though she also used to overheat quite easily.

Is your DS sweaty when you see to him after he's vomited?

My son had a few allergies and we eventually worked out the vomiting was triggered by sesame, sometimes up to 48 hours after consuming.

If it appears after a stomach bug, probiotics might help, along with fatty acids and limiting sugar, grains and dairy for a short time to allow the gut to recover.

If your child previously had a good allergy / intolerance, it could be related, even if they appear to have grown out of it.. there are mixed views on whether exclusion is good in the long term as it can lead to a permanent issue with the excluded foods but not excluding can leave the body in a continued state of stress which results in issues less easy to link to the food.
