Horrendous ear pain for days and not getting better - please help!

DS 10 has had an eat infection since Friday and the pain is really bad. In fact it's become worse this evening. I went to OOH on Saturday and the doc said it's vital and can't give anything and to keep giving paracetamol and ibuprofen but it just doesn't seem to touch the pain.

I also took him this morning to my gp and she said the same.

I'm really worried. He is in so much pain. He can't sleep, isn't eating as he just feels awful. He can't hear properly from the ear and can hear ringing sounds.

When my kids have had ear pain a dose of Calpol and a sleep usually sorts it. I've never known an earache to last this long. There's no sign of it getting better.

Ive tried warm oil in ear and a hot water bottle and constant paracetamol and ibuprofen but nothing is easing the pain.

Is there anything else I can try? Has anyone else experienced similar?!

I also wouldn’t blow up any balloons… go back to the doc tomorrow!

I agree with PP saline nosespray.
MiL swears by onion but anything that irritates the mucas membranes a bit ,like eculyptus or Vicks vapour rub, to help unblock the tubes. I hope he has some relief soon.

please don't put anymore oil in his ear as it could be making it worse if he has wax it would just be making it squishy. I think the instructions for the oil says not to use if you have ear pain?
What I would be doing is finding a cranial oesto - they can gently release the jammed up bones and pressure. They are trained to work on two week old babies. They can often almost immediately help ear pain. I feel for him I am wondering if he has a lot of wax inside as this can make the pain worse.

Please get your child seen again, ears can and do go terribly wrong sometimes

I’ve been called in in the middle of the night before for emergency mastoid surgery on a child close to death from an ear infection

Continuing increasing pain should always be taken seriously especially in ears where the infection can spread from the mastoid to the meningies

I had some liquid in my ear recently following a flight (the descent in particular screws with my ears), but I'm not in the UK so was able to see an ENT specialist pretty quickly, even though my problem was far less critical than your son's.
She recommended some anti-sinusitis medication plus saline nosespray and a cortisone-like nosespray - plus frequent equalising (which I always do anyway when flying). So your DS would need to hold his nose shut and blow hard to free up the tube. He should hear a popping sound as the tube tries to free itself. The caveat here: this was recommended for a relatively simple infection that didn't need antibiotics- it may not be appropriate in more acute situations.
And my sympathies to him - acute earache is pure misery.
