Does anyone have a Polo? The car, not the mint.

I need a new car but have a strict budget.

I’ve seen a 14 plate Polo GTI within said budget and I really like the look of it, I’m just concerned it might not be big enough. There is me, plus my 12 year old son and 7 year old daughter. We don’t travel too far and I do my weekly shop while they’re at their dads so boot space isn’t a problem I can use back seats if needed.

Any advice please? I’m looking at the five door model, if that makes a difference.

They're nice cars. I have the Up and love it. Driven the Polo when my van is in for work, which is often and it's fine.

Not the biggest car in the world but absolutely fine. A friend has one. She has a toddler and 5yo, so two car seats in the back and she gets on fine with it.

I had one for 6 year and only got rid of it as I’m having a second baby and need space for two car seats and all the baby paraphernalia, which you won’t need. Go for it- absolutely brilliant car. If you don’t mind having a slightly older car you may be able to get a Golf, which I also had before the Polo and can’t rate highly enough either.

Thanks everyone I was hoping you would say that!

I had a golf many moons ago and loved it!

I've had mine for 6 years and find it pretty roomy

Best car I ever had. I only had a three door but I loved it. Roomier than you think - I once bought an armchair in TK MAXX on impulse, stuck it in the boot with the back seats down!

A 2014 Polo is probably not that much smaller than a much older golf. We swapped a 2002 golf in for a 2012 Polo (both 3 door models) and side by side they looked pretty identical size wise. I really liked that polo but we had to get rid of it when we had babies because it was too small then but would be ok with bigger kids.

I used to drive a Polo, absolutely loved it and it will be big enough for you, by the sounds of it.
I’m now driving an Up and am finding it a bit of a Tardis to be honest. Our estate broke down and we had to use the Up for 2 weeks (family 2 adults, 2 teens and occasionally the Labrador in there too..) Even that worked for us, and the Polo is bigger than the Up.

I've got a three door Polo, three kids (past the car seat stage) and a big dog. Great car.

I had two kids under 2 in my polo. Loads of room

They are really light on fuel, so that is a bonus.

I am looking around for cars for my dd at the moment, and the biggest downside here (I am not in the UK, so perhaps just check if its the case there) is that they are quite expensive on insurance as they are one of the cars that are stolen the most. I have no idea why, but it makes the insurance premium way too high for me.

They are a great car though if that is not the case.

I have a 5 door polo. I find it has plenty of room - boot is certainly big enough for shopping even with seats up. Leg room in the back is fine, unless I'm taking my 6ft4in DBro. It probably wouldn't be comfortable taking 5 adults on a long journey though, and it might be difficult to fit luggage for a week's family holiday in the boot if you drive to your holidays. Mine allows you to put 1 or two seats down though, so with three of you in the car you can still extend the boot space.

I have a polo and we got 3 adults including 6ft2 son and all his gear for uni in for a 4 hour drive. In the boot ares there is a false floor which you can lift out to make the boot deeper too.

Don’t bother, husband purchased a brand new one & had nothing but problems with it. As soon as the warranty was up the turbo blew, a well known problem at the time & happening to many Polos, managed to get VW to cover some of the costs but as it’s so expensive to replace still ended up £1300 out of pocket, VW paid the other £1000 as a gesture of good will due to it just going over warranty. Not long after the water pump & something else went at a cost of around £800. Always been VW fans, never again after that & the emissions cheating. Look into something more reliable like Japanese brand Toyota, better quality, easier to repair/obtain parts, longer warranties etc. Really do your research on reliability, long term use etc, join fan forums for advice or you’ll end up with a turd like we did.
