How can my dd help her friend?

Dd is 13.
She spent the afternoon with her friend today.
When I collected dd, she said her friend had told her something confidential. She said she wouldn’t normally break confidence but she’s worried about her.
During their afternoon together they passed the local train station. Her friend said she wanted to go and lay on the tracks so she could get hit by a train. Dd said she a said ‘do you mean that?’ and her friend laughed and said ‘oh course not lol’.
However, later on in the day she confessed that she did kind of mean it and sometimes had suicidal thoughts and often thinks of laying in the road or on the railway track.
Dd begged me not to say anything to anyone.
I said that tomorrow, at school maybe to say to her friend that she had been concerned at what she had said and that she could maybe offer to go to the year head or the pastoral department with her friend for some support and advice?
I don’t know what else to say but it does worry me.
There have been two young people their age group in our area who have recently taken taken their own lives and a young man in our village earlier this year.
I hope to God she doesn’t mean it but I am a little concerned now.
What advice should I give me dd?

Mental Health First Aid England has good information on how to talk to someone who's suicidal but the main issue is to get this girl help. I know you've promised your DD but in your position I'd reach out to the school. Imagine how you'd feel if something happened.

This is a safeguarding issue. Your now an adult who knows that a child is feeling sducidal. You need to ring the school and share what you know with the pastoral team.

This. Explain to your DD that she did absolutely the right thing telling you, but you can't keep it a secret, it's just too big a thing.

Completely agree with @fallagain and @joborplay

Your daughter told you for a reason
