Recommended reading please - 7 and 10 year old girls

Can you recommend authors or box sets for a very willing/able/sensible pre-teen 10 year old reader, already finished Harry Potter and most of David Williams?

And a reluctant reader 7 year old please who mum prefers fact over fiction?

For your 10 yo - anything by Diana Wynne Jones; Susan Cooper’s Dark Is Rising series; Tom’s Midnight Garden; Moondial?

Are they he or she? If she, add Anne of Green Gables/Emily of New Moon; Noel Streatfeild; Joan Aiken.

For the 7 yo, the Treehouse series can’t be beaten for a reluctant reader - they’re very metafictional and play with the idea of the writers being real people, but are still funny and easy reads for that age group. (Lots of pictures).

Thank you - I’ve ordered Anne of Green Gables, and the first of the Dark is Rising Series for my eldest daughter. And 3 of the Treehouse books for my youngest.

For the 10 year old, look at The Reader Teacher lists for yrs 5&6 for some inspiration. Books by Katherine Rundell, Vashti Hardy, Peter Bunzl, Sophie Anderson, Jessica Townsend, Abi Elphinstone, Michelle Harrison are all magic/fantasy etc

For the 7 yr old try books by Harriet Muncaster, Clara Vuillamy, Pip Jones, Laura Ellen Anderson, Abie Longstaff. The Daisy series by Les Gray, The Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy and the animal books like The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson really helped my reluctant reader.

Oh and Swallows and Amazons if your ten year old hasn’t read it! My DD was spellbound by the 70s film which is very gentle and sweet (but when she watched the more recent version she complained that they had added too much extra action storylines!)

If your eldest likes fantasy and history, Joan Aiken’s Wolves of Willoughby Chase is amazing, and there was also a good film version of that too, from the 90s.

Ooh and also The Borrowers?

My 8 yr old is reading The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton.

My 12yr old is reading Elephants On Acid... don’t know the author t is fact snippets of interesting science experiments.

Any thing by Roald Dahl is a fave with both mine too

I don’t remember what I read as a child - apart from Goodnight Mr Tom at school, the Twinkle Annuals (I’m old!) and What Katy Did…so the up to date recommendations are great! I’ve recently discovered reading in lockdown too and now have a Kindle, so any recommendations for 45-year old also gratefully received! I like biographies especially…or adventure, explorer or funny novels. Tend to steer away from anything too dark…

I would concur with a lot of pp's and would add Jeremy Strong for 7 year old & When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit trilogy or Scarlet & Ivy for 10 year old.

@UpintNorth Thanks 😆 It's actually a song lyric! I think Daisy and the Trouble with Life was the book that used to make my DD literally laugh out loud but I think they're all good. DD also loved How to Train your Dragon series & started reading probably somewhere between ages of 7 & 10.

The Otteline series by Chris Riddel is great. Beautifully written with some fab illustrations and a great imaginative story.

Although they might be more for the younger one. Goth girl also very good.

My 10yo dd loved the Wolf Brother series and has read the wholes set very rapidly. The Chrestomanci series was also popular. She's currently reading the Lemony Snicket books.

Also The House Woth Chicken Legs, The Girl Who Speaks Bear and The Castle of Tangled Magic are all excellent.

And she enjoyed The Hobbit.
