What should I listen to on Audible?

I'm going to cancel my Audible as I never listen to it but I've got a couple of credits and, honestly, I'm struggling to spend them. Generally I prefer to read rather than listen to books so I have used Audible for some podcasts (West Cork, the Jon Ronson ones, the Dimbleby one on Rupert Murdoch) and I've downloaded David Sedaris BBC readings for long car journeys, likewise Alan Partridge and Martin Jarvis reading Just William stories. I also used a credit for Joan and Jericha (but didn't think the audiobook was nearly as funny as the podcast) - what can I spend my last credits on? When I tried to cancel earlier, it said that I would lose any remaining credits and having spent whatever the subscription is every month and not got very much out of it, I'd resent doing that.

Cabin Pressure

Do any of your friends use it? You can give the gift of a book to another user, so that could work?

Still Life
Away with the penguins.

Or, if you liked the west cork podcast how about the Michael Sheridan book on audible. It's called the The Murder of Sophie, I'm listening to it now. So many facts. Can't keep up.

I know you said you prefer to read books, but I have just listened to This Tender Land by William Krueger on a free Audible trial as it was for my book club and I couldn't get it quickly any other way. I loved it largely because of the fabulous voice of the narrator which was just right for the story. it's long (about 12 hours) and the themes are harrowing in places but I got completely engrossed and it made my daily walks go very quickly. In fact I extended my walks so I could listen to more!

All five series of Bleak Expectations are a single credit - unlike Cabin Pressure which is a rather mean one credit per series.

I bought a Jane Austin collection. It was dramatisation of all of her books with lots of good actors. It was very entertaining

If you like Miriam Margolyes then I’ve just got her autobiography. She reads it. It’s excellent so far. Ive also enjoyed Alan Davies’ autobiography but it’s quite harrowing. Tom Allen’s autobiography is great is you like him as is Deborah Orr’s Motherwell. Fiction I’d go for The Beekeeper of Aleppo. Heart breaking but brilliantly read.

I’ve been listening to the Inspector Rebus series. I really like the narrator’s voice! Also really enjoyed listening to the Thursday Murder Club.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'm not a fan of Cabin Pressure or BE (sorry, I know that lots of people love them). I don't really want an audiobook - I was thinking more along the lines of a podcast series.

What sort of thing do you actually like?

I don't like fiction books in audio, but I do like non-fiction/educational/entertainment stuff. If you've downloaded the Alan Partridge podcasts, have you got the books - I, Partridge & Nomad ?

GinJeanie · 25/09/2021 17:55

Just listened to Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart which is beautifully written and narrated brilliantly. I loved the BBC Emile Zola series Blood, Sex and Money (24 hours worth so good value! 😁). Agree, West Cork was brilliant. I listened to Dead in the Water by Penny Farmer which is linked to a BBC podcast called Paradise.

I've just cancelled my audible membership ... even with the enticement of free credits I struggled to get on with it .

I used my last credits on the Sean Locke podcasts .

Frenchfancy · 25/09/2021 17:59

The Martian and Project Hail Mary are brilliant. Better to listen to than to read.

American Dirt is also brilliant as an audiobook.

The Sandman

The orchard (podcast and currently free to members) is brilliant, if you like it then maybe BBC stone: the complete series Or 'the sensitive' different but I enjoyed both. I generally prefer dramatisation to books (as like you I prefer to read a good novel) but when I'm driving or doing tedious stuff I like to listen to a play. I also missed the BBC 'home front' drama when it was on (occasionally catching the odd snippet) so down loaded all three 'books' and really enjoyed them.
