Please recommend an apple that is as close to a Pink Lady as possible!

I'm addicted to them but I want to find a new variety for two different reasons:

  1. I feel guilty that they are imported from New Zealand when there are perfectly good apples in the UK thus creating a smaller carbon footprint and

  2. I went to pick up a pack of 6 at Tesco... They'd gone up to £3.05!!!

However, to me they are the perfect apple. Sweet, crisp and slightly acidic. I can't stand mushy apples!

Can anyone help me out of this (admittedly, first world) predicament, and recommend me a really good UK variety of apple to try and spot?

Yes Conference Pears are native to UK but we probably get imports of them too.

Gala and Jazz are worth trying, Enterprise has a good taste but a thick skin. It's a good idea to buy variety packs of English apples to see which you like.

Winter Pearmains are my favourite, but rarely seen these days.

Another vote for Aldi Jazz apples! So crunchy and delicious.

@TerrifiedandWorried not quite - Pink Lady is the variety called Cripp's Pink. It has to be grown to particular standards to be able to sell it as Pink Lady. You can sometimes find Cripp's Pink in supermarkets.

TerrifiedandWorried · 25/09/2021 14:58

@Magpiecomplex Cripps pink is a cultivar. One of several that can be sold as pink ladies. So all Cripps Pink can be Pink Ladies but not all Pink Ladies are Cripps Pink.

PileOfBooks · 25/09/2021 15:01

It is crackers that we have amazing apples and so many varieties here in England yet so little choice in the supermarket and we import them?!

Magpiecomplex · 25/09/2021 15:04

Terrified, fair comment. The other two cultivars are just sports of Cripp's Pink though, with different names. Sports of Gala, for example, usually keep the word Gala in their cultivar name and tend to be lumped in together as all Gala.

I had some Rosettes the other week which were very nice (although a colleague shuddered and said they wouldn't eat an apple with pink in the flesh Confused).

Pilateswife · 25/09/2021 15:37

Suffolk Pink? Probably not far off the cost of a Pink Lady tho..

MerryMarigold · 25/09/2021 15:38

I do like a Braeburn and I bought Cox's today. Both if these have lots of flavor but can be a bit mushyb if left too long. I keep my apples in the fridge to help crunchiness!

Royal Gala is an ok alternative.
