How to wash my mums hair

Namechangesagain · 25/09/2021 09:45

My mum is currently bedbound in hospital after falling.

Hospital won't let me use a blow up sink or the actual sink to wash her hair

Trying work out how i can wash her hair. I have a shampoo bar and a spray bottle but not sure how to make sure I get all the shampoo etc out.

(Though shampoo better than the blood its currently full of!)

On Amazon you can get no wash shower caps to wash hair that are bloody amazing I would use those.

I would wash it in small sections with a spray bottle filled with warm water, a little bit of shampoo and plenty of towels (one for round her shoulders and one to put against her hairline to avoid drips at least). You can towel dry each finished section before you move on to the next.

If they won't allow you to do it (insurance reasons?) - the hospitals I know have an approved hair dresser- usually on the premises - who comes to the bedside and does what is neccessary.

Many thanks Cooper88, I think this will solve my problem with my elderly relative too. Thank you.

Why won't they let you use a blow up sink? Surely you don't need their permission?

Tbh they should be ensuring your mum has clean hair and taking care of this themselves but I suppose that's too much to expect these days Hmm

Anyway, I popped by to suggest those shower caps and I hope your mum recovers soon Flowers

Cooper88, that’s brilliant!

Shellingbynight · 25/09/2021 11:33

I was going to suggestion Nilaqua, and I see someone has given a link above. No additional water required, it's often used for bedbound people.

CMOTDibbler · 25/09/2021 11:37

The Drench no rinse shampoo caps are really good. You just pop them on, massage through it (if you pop it in an insulated bag with a hot water bottle on the way there its even nicer), and you get clean hair. Pricey, but they really do work

tattiehat · 25/09/2021 12:03

I've used the shampoo caps on my Mum and was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked, she said her hair felt nice and clean after Smile

Wow. When I was bed-bound in hospital after orthopaedic surgery (admittedly many years ago now), they had plastic tray things that you could lie on (where your pillow would normally be). The nurses (yes, nurses!) would wash your hair with jugs of water and there was a chute to drain the water into a bucket. I suppose health and safety says no nowadays.

I hope you can sort something. It's really bad that the hospital can't help with this (but understandable given the state of things nowadays). Everyone feels so much better with clean hair!

Diceychoice · 25/09/2021 12:26

We use the no wash shower caps at work for people who can't get in the shower or bath or are bed bound.
Though with head injuries that have wounds/stitches etc we're told not to until the wound is knitted and healed because of the risk of getting the chemicals in or infection.
In those cases we use a sponge and a comb and gradually try to get any blood out gently combing and sponging the areas we can without disturbing the wound itself.

Torvean · 25/09/2021 12:36

If your mums in hospital. Unless she is not allowed to be moved, as opposed to bed bound. Tbe staff should use a shower trolley to give her a nice shower and wash her hair at the same time. If they can't thete are ways staff can wash hair. It's not difficult.

PolytheneRam · 25/09/2021 12:48

Why aren't the hospital staff washing her hair?

We have an inflatable sink on our ward but if that isn't available I sometimes wash patients' hair just using a bowl and loads of towels. It doesn't matter if the bedding gets wet because it's being changed anyway.

It pisses me off when a patient comes from another ward looking unkempt. There's no excuse for it.
