Do I have Septacemia?

Phoned by the GP receptionist to book me in for a follow up blood test as my blood culture tested positive for bacteria. It was the first I'd heard of it so I did ask whether I needed antibiotics. Apparently the hospital is supposed to follow up on abnormal results but didn't, GP has prescribed something exotic (AKA not penicillin/ amoxicillin) I googled and Septicemia ? Really FFS.

If you were septic you'd be in hospital. They don't flounce about with sepsis, it can kill you. Yes

Ignore the yes, typo.

I don’t know. I can’t see your results. But sounds like you may have some kind of gram positive bacterial infection that they’re treating you for to be safe?

Do you have symptoms of septicaemia?
confusion or disorientation,
shortness of breath,
high heart rate,
fever, or shivering, or feeling very cold,
extreme pain or discomfort, and.
clammy or sweaty skin.

My dad had septicaemia once and became delirious along with fever/shortness of breath, luckily we got him to hospital on time and he recovered after staying in hospital 2 months. It’s a really serious illness.

i don't quite understand your posting, OP.
do you mean that you looked up the name of the drug, and found that it is used to treat septicaemia.
that doesn't mean that you have septicaemia; if you did, you would be in hospital.
so don't worry too much.
what was the name of the drug.
and why did you have a blood test.
hope you feel better soon.

At the risk of sounding flippant - if you had septicaemia you wouldn't be posting on Mumsnet

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/09/2021 02:36

@womaninatightspot take the medication and if your symptoms get worse, go to A&E.

Floralnomad · 25/09/2021 02:40

Just because the drug you’ve been prescribed can be used for septicaemia doesn’t mean you’ve got it , I once had an infection and was given the drugs they give to treat TB , it didn’t mean I’d got TB .

Unlikely. My son went from mildly unwell to unconscious and in resus within an hour.
