I'll be honest with you. My ds wrote this when he was 8 and in year 3. He has moderate learning difficulties. The school just say vague things like he is working towards the expected standard. But I want to know more specifically where he is with his writing. Please tell me how old you would think the child who wrote this is it i hadn't told you.

Do you have a more focused pic? I can't see the letters clearly enough

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/09/2021 22:20

Nor can I, it's faint and blurry.

ImFree2doasiwant · 24/09/2021 22:21

I can't make it out well, but it looks neater than my 6yr old Yr 2.

Or one of his drawings he did last week if that's easier. I can't work out how to turn it the right way round.

No.....

CiderJolly · 24/09/2021 22:29

You can’t see the writing very well but it looks like he has written a lot and it looks neat from what I can tell.

Is he happy? Is he progressing? I’m sure you’re doing a great job either way.

TractorAndHeadphones · 24/09/2021 22:30

Can’t see anything tbh

KarmaViolet · 24/09/2021 22:31

I can't read the words but his writing looks very neat. I can see he's using capital letters. There don't seem to be spaces between words though. The neatness and quantity is better than my Y2 DD, but she's done visible finger spaces from Y1. I can't see the actual content for comparison.

IAmSantaOhYesIAm · 24/09/2021 22:32

Each child will be different and working at different levels. Do not compare your child to others, each will excel at different things at different times.

Buttonitboris · 24/09/2021 22:41

Before reading what you'd written, I guessed around age 7 and that's based on my dd who loves writing. My 11 year old's drawing is only marginally more accurate than what you've posted. He hates drawing and has produced only a handful in his lifetime.
I wouldn't get too hung up on what's 'expected'. Take pleasure in what your child enjoys, that's where their success lies.

tunainatin · 24/09/2021 22:49

I couldn't really read the writing but from that vague impression plus the picture I might have said around 6 - partly because I think the writing doesn't join up? But please be assured that if he's progressing, it's OK, it's completely random to attempt to compare them to their peers, they develop as such duffetebt rates. Once I got that into my head I enjoyed my children much more!

tunainatin · 24/09/2021 22:51

*different

00100001 · 24/09/2021 23:03

The writing pictures are unreadable.

Plotato · 25/09/2021 03:54

Hard to see but I'm afraid definitely not Y3 expected standard. Probably only a year or so behind though and not particularly unusual. I've taught LKS2 for about 6 years.

Plotato · 25/09/2021 03:55

Should have said, sorting out finger spaces would be a quick win. Handwriting doesn't look ready for joining which is a big thing in Y3.

Themirrorcracked · 25/09/2021 07:59

From what I can see it looks a lot neater than my nearly 8 year old (high functioning asd, dyslexia and possible dyspraxia) and he has written a lot!
We had the same problem with the vague comments from school- we got a tutor and she is much more direct.

Themirrorcracked · 25/09/2021 08:04

The drawing looks very similar to what my son would do btw!

Ozanj · 25/09/2021 08:10

The drawing looks similar to something my 5 yo nephew would produce, due to the shakiness of the lines. I can’t really see what he wrote but I think it’s because he hasn’t put enough pressure on the paper or written joined up - so again I’d put this down to an early writer (5ish).

I personally don’t think cursive is essential (I still write in block letters) but you might need to work on his hand strength. Things like playdough, kneading bread, holding chopsticks (even kid ones) etc really helps.

Howmanysleepsnow · 25/09/2021 08:21

Can you type out what he wrote? My son was working towards everything at the end of y2 and meeting expectations at the end of y3. (Except spelling) If you typed it out I could let you know how different it is or isn’t to my son who’s also just finished y3.
From what I can see, it looks neat, but I can’t make any words out.
