Meals where all the components are together?

SpottyPhone · 24/09/2021 20:07

DD aged 7 eats much better if all the components are together in a meal rather than separate, example Fish Pie or Lasagne.

So what meals are like that?

She doesn't like any kind of bread or wraps, so no fajitas, enchiladas, tacos etc.

She loves pasta and most vegetables.

I already do:
Lasagne
Cottage/Shepherds pie
Fish Pie
Spaghetti Bolognese
Meatballs and Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce

Anything else?

This macaroni pie is a bit like lasagne b it somehow tastes completely different. And the different method of making white sauce is amazing.

@Driftingblue

If you think the flavors of tacos would be a hit, just serve the filling mixed with rice. If you want to get fancy, put it in a casserole dish, sprinkle a bit of cheese on top and bake it.
Texas hash I think it’s called, when you cook the mince and rice together. Haven’t had it for years.

God I’m so jealous, my DD is the exact opposite and it’s a right old pain in the arse having to deconstruct everything and have gaps so nothing touches

DynastyBarry · 24/09/2021 20:50

Spetzofai

awholenewworlda · 24/09/2021 20:52

Jambalaya

I'm so jealous of your problem Blush my DC won't eat anything "mixed together" and these mixed dishes are my favourite.

I love a Thai curry, Chinese style curry or Indian curry. I put potato or sweet potato in, protein and lots of veg so it is a meal in itself.

Love a chunky soup. Minestrone, taco soup, curried lentil soup, chunky leek and potato, lentil and bacon. So many options.

Stew. Beef stew with dumplings is the best. Yum. Really any stew with dumplings in it though.

Sausage casserole, cowboy pie, spaghetti and hot dogs, hoover stew, spicy sausage stew, sausage and prawn jambalaya, loads of things you can make with sausages or hot dogs.

Mince you can do so much with. I do a pork mince and prawn jambalaya sometimes, mince and potato stew, mince curry, stuffed cannelloni, Bolognese pasta bake, slow cooked meatballs in a chunky vegetable sauce.

Got to love a stir fry too. Especially one covered in delicious satay sauce. Or a sweet and sour.

Because I like my food mixed up and my kids don't I quite often cook the components separately for them, and then Chuck it all in a pan or wock for what I'm feeling like having. If I'm having rice with something I like to do that so that all the rice is evenly mixed with the curry sauce or whatever, I usually Chuck a handful of extra frozen veg in to, like peas, sweet corn, soffrito or diced mixed veg. Just ups the veg content without and sad cold broccoli florets on the plate next to it. Shredded cabbage is excellent for this because it's so easy to throw into a stir fry or stew and also really good for you. I also keep frozen cut peppers and lots of cut up chilli, herbs, garlic and onion to make cooking quick flavourful meals more quickly.

Tray bakes? BBC Good Food has a great range.

Ambo21 · 24/09/2021 21:09

You say she is not keen on curries but have you tried her with a very simple dhal.. you can add cherry tomatoes and chopped spinach as you go along.. as well as any other veg she is happy with.. dhal can be soupy or thick and as spicy or not ...according to taste..

When you say tacos do you mean the hard shell ones? If not you could use the crisps and layer them up with the taco mix, top with cheese and grill

NannyAndJohn · 24/09/2021 21:15

Anything rice or pasta based should do the trick. Or something like a frittata or Spanish omelette.

FurzeMinister · 24/09/2021 21:22

Polenta. Make it with butter and a hardish grated or shredded cheese. Serve it hot with more butter, kosher salt, ricotta, sauce (I like pesto) and/or cooked veggies like peppers, courgette, aubergine, onions, etc. Add in chopped fresh herbs like basil, cilantro, marjoram, parsley, sage, etc., and let them wilt as it heats.

SilenceOfThePrams · 24/09/2021 21:36

Stuffed vegetables
Loaded potato skins
Aubergine or chicken parmigiana
A proper baked bean casserole with belly pork
Paella

Ham and leek chopped up in cheese sauce with mashed potato on the top.

Suet meat puddings.

You need the Roasting Tin books. Absolutely brilliant one pan dishes- there’s a few of them now, and they are all great.

Chicken Biryani, you can add veggies like peas and cauliflower , or chickpeas or nuts.

Chicken pot pie?

You could make a base of rice pilaf with veggies , and top it with a pice fish/grilled kebabs.
