Question about liquid paracetamol

Daft question but bear with me I'm recovering from surgery. Is there such a thing as liquid paracetamol for adults?

I had surgery on Monday on my stomach. I've got tramadol from the hospital it it's making me constipated and very drowsy! The pain isn't too bad so I'm going to try just paracetamol. But can't swallow tablets yet. My dp got me some liquid paracetamol but it was later at night from a supermarket and he said the only one was the children's one.

It's 120mg per 5ml but this means I need to take 4 spoonfuls to get roughly equivalent on 1 paracetamol tablet. As a regular paracetamol does is 500mg per tablet. So really need 8 spoonfuls for any pain relief. Which is too much right now. So I wondered if a liquid paracetamol for adults exists? Which is stronger so you need less? Or do people who need the liquid just use the children's one?

When I Google just the kids stuff comes up and I'm really dozy right now! Thanks

You need either the 6+ calpol so 250mg in 5ml, so you’d need 4 x 5ml syringes, or effervescent paracetamol which you can usually buy over the counter in the pharmacy. Effervescent tastes yacky but it’s a lot cheaper than buying all that calpol at the rate you’d get through it.

dementedpixie · 24/09/2021 08:36

You get calpol 6+ and caplol fast melts that are age 6+ too

GoBrookeYourself · 24/09/2021 08:36

Hi, adults can use the 6plus calpol too and liquid paracetamol designed for kids. The dosage for calpol is 4 times a day, 2-4 5ml spoons (depending on your size you can go lower/higher end of this)

Hope you feel better soon!

He got you baby stuff

Try 6 plus, 250 per 5ml or effervescent tablets

SickAndTiredAgain · 24/09/2021 08:40

Calpol fast melts give an adult dosage I think

Fluffypastelslippers · 24/09/2021 08:42

You can get soluble paracetamol

ChicChaos · 24/09/2021 08:46

As PP have said, four syringes of Calpol 6+ will do the job - not seen any adult liquid paracetamol for sale and if it was unflavoured I imagine it won't taste good! Could also try own brand children's liquid paracetamol if the Calpol works out too expensive.

If it's infant Calpol, you'd probably need even more as the 6+ is stronger. Good luck with the recovery OP.

Thanks mumsnetter's! Yes he did get the baby stuff! We don't have children so he has no experience of it's use as intended either! I'll try the 6+ or melts for now. I don't think I'd manage the effervescent yet or if it would be OK for my stomach.

I know it's such a basic question but when you've got a foggy head it really helps to ask people who know! Thanks all

Effervescent tablets are OK so long as you do not require low sodium - 20% of max adult daily intake per tablet - my blood pressure issues mean it can only be taken occasionally. Calpol 6+ is fine. You can also use the adult capsules, either whole or opened and poured into a yoghurt or something to help it go down. Normal paracetamol tablets can be crushed too.

Postdatedpandemic · 24/09/2021 08:58

If you go to the pharmacy and ask they can sort different solutions. DS1 couldn't swallow tablets and we had some granular pain killers, just mix with honey or whatever. Can't remember if paracetamol or ibuprofen as over 20 years ago. Just get DH to ask a decent pharmacist.

theseoldbone · 24/09/2021 09:08

Yes, I have liquid paracetamol for adults. It was prescribed to a relative who struggles to swallow tablets and she had too much so gave it to me. Tastes a bit like calpol but in a bigger bottle

Mariell · 24/09/2021 09:27

If you can’t get hold of the liquid stuff, crush a tablet with the back of a spoon in kitchen paper or with a pestle and mortar and sprinkle over the name in a jam sandwich.

You can bite the jam sandwich but not suck rather than chew and it will melt in your mouth and be easy to swallow.

KeyWorker · 24/09/2021 09:57

If all you have is the 120mg/5mls you’ll need to take 41.6mls to make 1gram. That’s the same as taking 2 500mg tablets. It’s fine to do if you can stomach 41mls of sweet sticky medicine! It’s exactly the same as tablet form paracetamol, same daily dose ect.

KeyWorker · 24/09/2021 10:00

Also if not managing tablets is a long term thing the liquid paracetamol 500mg/5mls is a thing g but you can’t but over the counter as far as I can remember, it’s prescription only.

FannyFifer · 24/09/2021 10:07

You can buy liquid paracetamol for adults. We have it for our patients at work.
Ask in pharmacy.

purpleme12 · 24/09/2021 10:10

I can't swallow tablets either
I always buy the soluble ones
Don't dissolve them in water then they really will taste horrible. Dissolve them in squash. Just a bit if squash so you don't have to drink tonnes of the stuff to get it all down

Neonplant · 24/09/2021 11:53

It won't be hopefully. I'm actually managing my smaller prescription tablets. It's just I have a lot right now so where I can I'm trying to minimise the amount of tablets I'm taking.

Thanks for the advice all. My sister is getting me some of the 6+ stuff today. Not that I don't love the tramadol 😂 but it's fairly hardcore.

Ask her to get you the soluble tablets (the ones that dissolve in water)

purpleme12 · 24/09/2021 12:07

Yes I once had the dose it said for adults for calpol (as I didn't have any dissolvable adult tablets in)
The calpol did nothing for me. Whereas the dissolvable ones would work normally

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 24/09/2021 12:11

What about soluble paracetamol? Most paracetamol actually dissolve in a little bit of water anyway

snapple21 · 24/09/2021 12:31

I had liquid paracetemol when I had my tonsils out.

PaperMonster · 24/09/2021 14:05

The hospital prescribed me children’s liquid paracetamol when I had an op but it caused an allergic reaction. So I got the effervescent paracetamol.

Etonmessisyum · 24/09/2021 14:37

Just get the generic paracetamol though op, getting branded calpol @ 20ml a time will get expensive! I had to take the ibuprofen when I had an operation on my jaw, can’t take liquid meds at all since then. Just the thought of the syrup urgh. I’m also a paeds nurse and I can’t stand the smell of paracetamol or ibuprofen. But I’m sure plenty adults use it. If it’s for long term/chronic pain they can be prescribed a big bottle as the volumes used make it more cost effective. Some of our kids with complex needs have the large bottle but only the 16 yo and older.
