Secondary School Children - Does Yours Wear A Mask?

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 23/09/2021 23:46

Hi

If you have a secondary school age child does he /she wear a mask at school?

If yes how do they feel about it?

If the answer is no how do you feel about it and how do you manage the situation?

No covid deniers please... Im a frontline registered nurse and deal with the trauma of covid everyday .

Many thanks

My two (yr7 & 9) don’t wear them, and I’ve stopped wearing them too. If the government/school advised again, then we would, but we’re enjoying the freedom for now.

reluctantbrit · 24/09/2021 07:58

London borough - no mask wearing here. They can if. they want. but I think they are in the absolute minority.

DD really hated. it, she felt it made the lessons more difficult, hard to hear other students. and teachers. I wouldn't mind them in the narrow corridors etc though.

reluctantbrit · 24/09/2021 07:59

Saying that, we all wear masks in shops and other indoor places and public transport. As long as we don't have to talk to people.

FE college here. Due to what I consider extremely confusing management communications it is very very seldom you see a student in a mask. I’ve given up trying to uphold rules higher up do nothing to implement or enforce. I just clamp my mask on and carry on!

Beamur · 24/09/2021 08:05

DD 14 is highly mask compliant. Wears it on public transport and in school. Not sure if they take them off in lessons but they are still worn in communal areas.
She got slightly bullied at school earlier in the year because she was obviously taking care, wiping her desk, sanitising hands etc. She has a form of OCD and distinct issues around germ phobia so this was particularly unacceptable and the school did deal with it.
She wears it because she wants to stop other people catching it. She had Covid at the end of last year and didn't pass it on.
As a family we all wear masks when required or when we think it's prudent to.

Verite1 · 24/09/2021 08:13

DS wears one on train to school (and is a minority) but not in school. None of the other children wear one.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 24/09/2021 08:17

Yes, on public transport (50 € if caught without), in public places like supermarkets, museums, shops etc. and at school if not at the desk. 750 pupils, no cases since school started back in August.
I just got the mail that next week school will operate on 'green' = full f2f lessons aigain as there are still no cases.

LloydColesCommotions · 24/09/2021 08:19

No need to now but no, not before, I exempted him.

User5827372728 · 24/09/2021 08:21

In the school I work with 1700 kids realistically I’ve seen 8 wearing a mask and maybe 1 staff member, who is an admin staff so doesn’t see the kids

cricketmum84 · 24/09/2021 08:21

Year 8 daughter still wears a mask on the bus but not in school. I can encourage her but I'm not there to force her and nobody else is wearing masks.

I do make her change and wash her hands thoroughly as soon as she gets home though.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 24/09/2021 08:24

Yes because we are in Scotland and they have no choice in the matter.

They - and I - think it's fairly pointless. Along with the sanitising hands and tables every 2 minutes.

MrsJBaptiste · 24/09/2021 08:25

DS1 is at college so wears a mask when he needs to, I'm not sure if he puts it on when he's on the train. I don't think he does.

DS2 is at high school and nobody wears one anymore. He walks there so no public transport.

To be honest, the only place I now wear a mask is the hairdressers. I see very few people in them in the supermarket, etc. which is fine by me as I could never remember to take the damn thing out when we had to wear them a few months ago.

PeonyTime · 24/09/2021 08:25

England.
School I work in, maybe 1% of kids are choosing to wear a mask.
My 12 yr old (different school) chooses to wear a mask on the bus and at lesson change over, but not when seated in class.

JaneLivesHere · 24/09/2021 08:26

No, I don’t think anything is wearing them at DD’s school. My older dd gets the bus to six form college so wears one on the bus but not at college.

I’m a primary school teacher so maybe because I am so used to not wearing one on the classroom I just look at it as normal.

Handsnotwands · 24/09/2021 08:30

We’ve just been asked to start again as covid is rife

I can only speak for DS but he doesn’t care either way. He wore on religiously before breaking up for the summer and is again now.

Wincher · 24/09/2021 08:42

Our secondary school (London) is still enforcing mask wearing. My DS has just started year 7 (and only recently turned 11, so not very used to mask-wearing) and it's a bit of a struggle for him to get used to wearing it all day. We need to experiment a bit more to find the most comfortable ones - any recommendations? He has just had Covid - not caught at school - so it does seem a bit pointless for him to wear one now, but the thing is that masks only do any good if (nearly) everyone is wearing them. it seems totally pointless people wearing them if no one else does as masks protect other people rather than yourself!

I find the surgical ones easier to wear as they are lighter. We can only wear those or other govt approved ones. In the interests of the planet early on I got some cloth ones, and literally felt I couldn't breathe. Dh can't wear ffp2 though he says they feel too tight.
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/09/2021 08:45

My Y10 wears a mask all day. She's had her first vaccine on my account.

spiderlight · 24/09/2021 09:10

My 14-year-old does. They are required to wear them in corridors and communal areas but not in class, but he chooses to wear one anyway. He's just used to it now, and his best friend has cystic fibrosis so he's very aware of the importance of doing all he can to avoid catching/spreading covid.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 24/09/2021 22:47

@Geamhradh i agree.

For the first 9 months we wore reuseables , but the surgical ones are much lighter so unfortunately we wear those now .

Those of you who have children that will voluntarily wear a mask , i hope you are proud of your parenting and proud of your DC.

Our Govt have got this very wrong and those who only wear masks when the Govt stipulate it , are sadly misguided and will prolong the desperate situation that we NHS staff find ourselves in .

Social and moral responsibility seems to have gone out of the window for many people.

We are in Ireland, DC are at secondary school, they wear masks all through the school day (apart from eating/drinking when they wear a visor instead) and keep them on until they are well away from the school crowds leaving the school. No-one is exempted. Every child in secondary school has had the opportunity to be fully vaccinated, if they wish since August/September this year. 84% of the population aged 12 or over is fully vaccinated. The percentage is probably higher in DC's school. Each child in DC's school has a "Covid" bag (well an antiCovid bag) with a visor and wipes to clean down desk and chair when moving classes and there are multiple hand-sanitiser stations in the classrooms and corridors. About 1,000 students, maybe 90 or so staff. There have been 4 cases notified to parents during term time since March 2020, possibly 2 students and 2 staff members. Windows are open all the time, was freezing last year approaching Christmas, then schools were shut again for months.

DC are wearing re-useable cotton masks like these ones: -
