Freaking out about work

BrickingIt44 · 23/09/2021 02:55

It's the middle of the night and I'm trying to work on a report I should have had weeks to work on. It's so bad! I've had ages to work on it and get the details right but I just...haven't. And now there's no time. I'll have to hand it in tomorrow and they'll see how crap I am at this job. Don't know why I'm posting here, just losing my mind a bit and needed to share!

Anyone else freaking out at 3am? Anyone else feel so overwhelmed and anxious about everything that they make massive cockups they might never professionally recover from?

Flowers and Brew

I'm awake and worrying about work too, hate the feeling.

groovergirl · 23/09/2021 03:11

The reason you are freaking out is because it is 3am. Everything feels so much more onerous and awful in the middle of the night, when your brain is trying to rest and purge.

Just keep plodding on. Do the best you can, which is probably better than you think atm. Put the radio on for company or listen to Lo-Fi Girl on YouTube. Have a half-hour walk in the morning, then re-read and edit your work.

Are you actually missing factual details, or is it just the writing that's holding you up?

BrickingIt44 · 23/09/2021 03:15

I was actually listening to lo fi girl! Good recommendation.
Missing a lot of factual details unfortunately. Too late to ask people now! But plod on I shall.

Thanks @lannistunut (just figured out quoting!). It's crap isn't it? Why can't we just be feudal peasants again? Yeah most got the plague and died before they were 30, but they didn't have to deal with reports and spreadsheets and emails!

It is awful. Until a year ago I didn't have a very stressful job, now I have to work ridiculous hours without support.

Just do asuch as you can and then try not to leave it so late next time!

BrickingIt44 · 23/09/2021 03:28

@lannistunut I just hope I get a chance for a next time. I get overwhelmed and it's like my brain just decides that sticking my head in the sand is the best course of action. My brain is a moron.
I hope whatever's keeping you awake gets better soon!

Well today it's that I am about to go to the airport for work but yesterday it was freaking about things not done...but in fact, I am as far ahead as anyone expects.

Get on paper the current background/state of play and what facts you know, discuss around it, do you have recommendations for actions or conclusions to add? Those conclusions may be that this needs further research or fact finding before concrete actions can be suggested - it's a legitimate thing to keep include.

And I agree with getting a draft on paper and then going for a walk before re-reading and editing it.

BiddyPop · 23/09/2021 03:33

Good luck

BrickingIt44 · 23/09/2021 03:36

@BiddyPop Sounds like a good situation to be in! Hope you have a good flight.

Yeah, I just need to get a plan on paper and calm the feck down and get on with it. Good idea about the walk too. Clear my head before rage-submitting.

Procrastinating by watching celebrities do impressions. Ariana Grande is amazing! I'm my own worst enemy.

Any chance you can submit a generalised report while then in the mean time gather specific information ?

BrickingIt44 · 23/09/2021 03:59

@Hawkins001 Alas, no. Has to be the whole thing. Nothing to do but do it. I just wish I knew how to stop it happening again. I didn't even pull all-nighters at uni.

Ah I see, to prevent a rush, for other projects, what about one chapter at a time ?

BrickingIt44 · 23/09/2021 09:49

@Hawkins001 Yeah breaking it down would be a good idea for next time. Need to stop feeling overwhelmed by it all and just do it. My boss already thinks I'm an idiot. Which is a fair assessment! I got the bloody thing done anyway. It's crap but it's better than nothing. Thanks all.
