Has anyone seen this - it's on Amazon Prime?
Absolutely fascinating documentary about the rise of the Lularoe MLM

I loved this, I couldn't stop watching! I thought it was so sad in places though

TheQueef · 22/09/2021 19:00

Yeah I watched it!
Really good explanation of how MLM is destructive.
I watched all four parts together I was so intrigued.

TheQueef · 22/09/2021 19:10

One thing that still puzzles me though.
Who was buying all these outlandish clothes?!? The actual sales were huge!

katemuff · 22/09/2021 19:13

I'm finding it sad, infuriating and so so frustrating!
They specifically targeted new mums, and in a way groomed them.
I think if this financial mess happened to a similar sized group of men it would be on the financial pages, maybe I am wrong.

Yes, it was good. Very good.

Although I would like someone to now dig further below the shiny surface and look at the shared techniques /cult like characteristics /links to Mormonism that they almost all share. I think there is an even darker underbelly that none of the documentary makers are prepared to get too close to.

But yes, it was well done. And the clothes were awful!

I think that modest clothing in bright prints and patterns is very popular with the christian moms in the US and not very readily available. The clothes were sold in 'bulk' in a way - a party and lots buying at once so social contagion. I think that the originals were US manufactured and again appealed to conservative american women - especially Mormons.

Ta Kate
My thinking was that surely that much distinctive pattern would be noticeable from space I'd not thought of how much was just not moving. I was forgetting the modesty angle too.

The way they weaseled their way throughout those families is so sinister.

BrownEyedSquirrel · 22/09/2021 19:22

Ooh, will watch tonight!

I agree, it is complete exploitation and it almost seems like they believe their faith supports it. And the underlying message of "if you fail it is all your fault and YOU are the failure" is just horrible, absolutely horrible. I am fascinated, 1 part left to watch tonight

It was the 'cult uniform' wasn't it? They all saw them on their peers and it was all normalised. They also spoke about how soft the fabrics were initially before manufacturing went to hell. Cult behaviour has always fascinated me. Looking at all the women in a conference together was so weird - not a man in sight, almost NO women of colour. Really weird and so few of them noticed.

It's free on Prime Squirrel well worth it if you've a telly gap.
It showed me just how slick and appealing they can make it look. A good reminder too of how many normal, kind, intelligent people were swept up with these schemes.

ISpyCobraKai · 22/09/2021 19:30

This is on my list.

Absolutely

I get the impression someone, somewhere much higher up decided this format was brilliant and started teaching it.
That wasn't luck they grew so big it was social engineering.
I think your right Worrier they should investigate much further.

Almost ALL these brands are founded by mormons from my reading and mormons ALL spend 2 years door knocking and 'selling' religion. I tried a door knocking job once and it was horrific - but they are primed for it from an early age.

Two of the ‘sister wives’ wives do LulaRoe I think. Classic mormans! I didn’t know what it was until now. They just talk about their own business.

honeyfox · 24/09/2021 18:31

Was just about to say that about the Sister Wives. I never realised it was a MLM, must watch!

honeybeetheoneandonly · 24/09/2021 23:15

I've just finished the first episode and so far the clothes seem to be really popular and well liked. The way it initially started seems to genuinely have been word of mouth. It's really sad that they went down the mlm route rather than trying to make it a sustainable business. The product seems to have started with good quality and realistically priced. I may feel totally different by the end but at the moment I really feel for DeAnne.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 24/09/2021 23:32

Never mind. Sympathy has already waned.

coolcahuna · 23/10/2021 21:22

I'm watching now and all 4 episodes in a row ! A few things that stood out for me is how she started out as quite a legitimate business making her own clothes. I couldn't get over the bit about the gastric sleeves!

StartingGrid · 23/10/2021 21:53

I actually was really surprised to see it's still trading, kind of sad people are still sucked in after so much negative publicity and poor quality clothing
