Christy towels... Quality not that great? Do they last??

MrsH201 · 22/09/2021 12:47

I bought some Christy towels online and they've just arrived. They are from 2 different ranges - the 'Chroma' range and the 'Renaissance' range. Both from the Christy website as they have a sale on at the moment.

I'm a bit bemused. Straight out of the packaging, the quality doesn't look anything special. I bought some Sanderson ones 14 years ago that are still going strong and are miles thicker than these. I've also had the odd Egyptian or Supima cotton towel bought from supermarkets over the years (not used regularly so can't say how they stand up to wear) and tbh the supermarket ones look comparable/better than these Christy ones.

Do the Christy ones wear particularly well? I don't mind spending more if they will last and last. If you just pay for a recognised brand name, I'd be just as happy with Asda! But I do want some that will last, as I find it a faff having to buy new things.

I'd be very grateful for comments both from (a) those who have had Christy towels, esp the Renaissance ones, regarding their durability and (b) those who might be able to recommend alternatives that are good quality and have lasted many years. I prefer a soft and reasonably thick towel.

I bought a couple a few years ago, they are alright. Not really thick and fluffy, although I prefer and thin towel to be honest.

Most of mine are actually from Asda and they are super thick and fluffy. I’ve had them for years and they are still going strong. My DCs hate it when they are in the wash and they have to use the ‘rubbish’ ones.

I have some which are in regular use as guest towels from the early 90's thick, wash well and fluffy still. I decided that I really should replace them and bought some more Christy towels about three years ago.
Thankfully due to sloth I hadn't thrown out my old towels which are now back in use and the new ones relegated to dog towels. Sorry long way of saying I think they are crap. Following as currently using Tesco own but would like some better towels.

magicstar1 · 22/09/2021 13:00

I have Christy towels that I've been using for years...still great quality. They weren't particularly expensive though, I got them in the bargain basement of a large department store.

DameCelia · 22/09/2021 13:04

They used to be the best, years ago, now no better than any others. I suspect that now (like everyone else) their manufacturing has moved to the cheapest supplier and materials with an associated drop in quality.

We are to blame btw, wanting frequent new versions of everything as cheaply and easily as possible has meant really good quality, long lasting goods that won't be repurchased every year no longer exist.

I do think the Instagram trend of replacing everything and coordinating everything in your house regularly is partly to blame.
Old gimmer.

Mine are all about 15 years old, no idea what range, but apart from colour fading have lasted well.

BrilloPaddy · 22/09/2021 13:08

We've got 2 sets and they're OK but nothing to rave about. I stupidly thought that washing would improve their thickness but it never did, and they're not remotely luxurious.

I've since bought a few John Lewis ones that are miles better in terms of fluffiness. Think they're Supima cotton, the bath sheets were around £50 but well worth it.

Thanks everyone! My mum just popped by and I mentioned it to her. She said exactly same thing as many of you ladies - my last towels were bought 14 years ago and the quality of most things has gone massively downhill since then! What a shame...

I love Asda's Egyptian cotton towels. Really good quality.
Toomuchis · 22/09/2021 14:01

Had Renaissance for years - wore brilliantly with lots of use and hard washing. Got new ones, Renaissance again, had to return half of them with a manufacturing fault and the others are already wearing after a year.

Reallybadidea · 22/09/2021 14:09

I bought some of these www.soakandsleep.com/luxury-100-egyptian-cotton-bath-sheet-white.html 4 years ago. They are lovely and thick and have worn extremely well.

MrsH201 · 22/09/2021 14:34

@Reallybadidea - Oh, great suggestion with Soak & Sleep, but I'm probably terribly old fashioned (and boring!) and buy beige towels, bedlinen, etc. and they sadly stopped stocking neutral tones a while ago in favour of mostly white and grey Sad

@Toomuchis - Looking at the towels I have here, that doesn't surprise me in the least. Very helpful to learn from your experience. Thank you!

A couple of votes for Asda, which is promising. Although this is the closest to beige that they seem to have, which is way off (on my screen at least!) and I'd like them to at least tone in with my existing dark beige ancient towels:

Sainsbury's towels are good, and the more expensive M&S ones.
I was disappointed with John Lewis, especially as they were by far the priciest.

HalzTangz · 22/09/2021 14:44

My partner is obsessed with these towels, I think they are rubbish.
My cheaper Hugh street branded towels dry far better than his towels

Just to add I've had my high street bran towels for 22 years now and they are still going strong

John Lewis towels are fab

MrsH201 · 22/09/2021 16:06

@Reallybadidea - I was totally wrong about Soak & Sleep... they DO have beige towels! I will have a good look later...

I think Sainsburys’s towels are pretty good.
When DS returned to uni last year I got him some from Tesco (Fox & Ivy), they’re incredibly thick and were good value.

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 22/09/2021 17:31

I have 20 year old Next towels which are as fluffy and soft as the day I got them. I doubt they would be the same quality if purchased now.

WellTidy · 22/09/2021 17:33

Nothing like as good as they were. They were the bees knees. Now they’re the same as any other range. My absolute favourite towels were the Ultimate range from BHS, I’ve had mine for 10+ years and they are really thick and sumptuous.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 22/09/2021 17:33

My oldest Christy ones are great...my new ones are pretty standard although they have washed well. Sainsbury's ones are lovely and fluffy but they really don't keep their colour and they bleach out a lot. I've got a couple of M&S towels and I've been very pleased with those.

Lulu1919 · 22/09/2021 17:41

We had a set of Christy towels for our wedding ..1990 ...still going strong !!
