How warm is your house?

With the news full of warnings about forthcoming energy price rises, I've started to look around our home to see where we can stop draughts and make it warmer (thick curtains, draught excluders, that kind of thing). I was curious to know and monitor the temperature in the house, partly because DH moans that "it's cold" while I'm sitting here having a menopausal hot flush ...

Thermometer arrived yesterday. With no heating in the house last night, living room was 23.7 and has only dropped to 22.8 this morning. Bedrooms similarly are 23 degrees, even with windows open, which might explain why we struggle to sleep. I'm guessing our house is well-insulated Grin and now I need to convince DH that it's not cold at all.

I'd like to get the living room down to about 21, and the bedrooms down to 19, I think. How warm do you have your homes? Will you be turning the thermostat down this winter?

27 degrees in the living room

SweetPetrichor · 22/09/2021 20:29

It ranges from around 19C to 20C.I don’t mind wrapping up but I keep tarantulas and it’s easier to keep the house temp decent than run lots heating mats to keep them warm. They don’t need it hot but the general rule of thumb is that if you’re comfortably, they’re comfortable…so if I have to wrap up, I’d worry about them being chilled.

I’m in a Victorian terrace and my living room is currently 22 C. I only have my thermostat on manual, tend to put the fire on in one room and use the electric blanket and hot water bottles. Checked my annual usage and I only use the heating Dec-Feb. I also need to sort out the log burner in the middle room so I can reduce that a bit more!

Im also in a victorian terrace...my thermostat says its 20c....I only moved in a month ago and i'm hoping its a warm house...my last house was freezing in the winter.

Biscuitandacuppa · 22/09/2021 20:41

@myusernamewastakenbyme have you got double glazing? I’ve also not knocked through and have 2 reception rooms and the kitchen rather than an open plan living/kitchen/dining. So that’s easier to keep warm.

DuesToTheDirt · 22/09/2021 20:41

Victorian semi, currently about 19C indoors. Not quite warm enough for me, but not quite cold enough to put the heating on. My rule of thumb is that if it's 15 outside during the day, and I'm sitting around, I need the heating on.

DuesToTheDirt · 22/09/2021 20:44

With no heating in the house last night, living room was 23.7 and has only dropped to 22.8 this morning.

Without the heating on, that's the temperature of our house when it's about 25-30 outside...

delilahbucket · 22/09/2021 20:49

Currently 20.5 degrees. Heating comes on if it drops below 19.5 during the day, or 10 at night. We have Nest and it's very efficient, but we do have super insulation in our house. I've got a blanket over my legs because I'm always cold if I'm just sitting. DH is in shorts! I don't think we'll be changing our usage habits as our bills were quite low, and this will be the first winter since we moved in seven years ago where no one is home during the day, as I used to work from home.

40somethingJBJ · 22/09/2021 20:55

Living room is currently 22.1 and I’m sat in a vest top with the fan on (being peri menopausal is a nightmare!). Not had the heating on yet, as the thermostat doesn’t kick in until it drops below 19, and thats only between 6am-10am and 3pm-9pm. I can’t stand it too warm, and I like the room cold overnight.

User45829057 · 22/09/2021 20:57

20c, fortunately as we had our 4 year old boiler's yearly service and it had had a leak and damaged some innards and now has a danger, do not use sticker on it, we will probably need a new boiler- hope it doesn't take long and hope there isn't a boiler shortage😩 fortunately it is under guarantee. Hope the warm weather holds.

whojamaflip · 22/09/2021 21:02

21.6 in our kitchen with the front door wide open! We do have an Aga which keeps it toasty warm but apart from a wood burning stove in the living room that's our only source of heating. Bedrooms are currently at around 12.

Order of the day in winter is thick pjs, bed socks, onesies when it gets really cold and extra blankets! Quite often have ice on the inside of the (single glazed!) windows when it's really cold.

It's an old listed farmhouse and we simply haven't the money to put central heating or secondary glazing in. I do put the cling film stuff on the inside of the windows in about November to cut the droughts. All outside doors have curtains covering them with draught excluders and we all have got water bottles.

I travel quite regularly away with work and really struggle to sleep when I'm away as it's too hot!!

BoomChicka · 22/09/2021 21:03

It's been 24° downstairs this week (NW) I keep thinking it's nearly heating time but I've still got all the windows open Confused

Binting · 22/09/2021 21:04

21.5 on my flat with no heating. Weather app says it’s 16 degrees outside. I’m till using my 1 tog quilt, with a flat sheet (menopausal). I have been putting socks and hoodies on though some days when I’m just sitting.

I only ever heat up rooms that I’m using and I never have the heating on in the kitchen. I bought a heated throw last year which is brill, plus the cat is a furry fatty who likes to snuggle up with me when it’s cold. I’m hoping I won’t get too much of a shock when the heating bill increases this winter.

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/09/2021 21:04

I like a warm house - it’s about 22 degrees or so generally, more if I get cold.

Binting · 22/09/2021 21:07

I don’t just sit around in socks and a hoodie though, that would be wrong Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 22/09/2021 21:16

The 27 degrees c in the living room is without heating. Top 2 floors wsw facing flat. One outside wall. Sunny day heated it up. Plus computer was on for a couple of hours.

Insulated loft ( needs another layer especially under the boards)

Insulated loft hatch.

Good double glazing downstairs. Upstairs glazing is a bit shit and colder.

Insulated wall.

Need to sort out proper curtains for the big room upstairs.

Confusedandshaken · 22/09/2021 21:17

I normally turn the heating on when the room temp drops below 18 and we aren't there yet. Unless there is actual snow/hard frost on the ground we don't have any heat on at all after 9 at night so it only does on upstairs for a couple of hours in the mornings. It was cold in the bedroom last night though. I think it's nearly time to switch from the summer bedspread to a proper duvet.

The only exception to this is it it's a cloudy day with no sunshine - then DH can get very chilly if he's sitting still WFH. Then the heating goes on in his study and my workroom.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/09/2021 21:17

And a bit draughty around your nethers @Binting

Lunaduckdrop · 22/09/2021 21:26

Heating kicks in at 18 downstairs, 16 upstairs. 20.6 in the living room at the moment. Anything over 21 is too warm for us.

Binting · 22/09/2021 21:27

Ahh, I’m currently rocking the old school 70’s look in that area, keeps things warm.
MrsDThomas · 22/09/2021 22:06

Half is ok, the original part is cool. Its 250 yrs old and quirky but id rather that than a new house with insulation. Its kept warm with a multifuel burner. And lpg. Im one to switch off and yell “put a jumper on”!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 22/09/2021 23:51

We aren't on the gas grid so our heating is off now and will stay off probably for another month.

We never heat our bedroom. We sleep better with a cold room and warm bed.

Generally we wrap up warm because electric heating is expensive.

Fifthtimelucky · 23/09/2021 14:15

Our sitting room (which is a conservatory) is currently 23.9 with a window open, which is too hot for me.

My husband and I have different views on the perfect temperature for the sitting room but fortunately there is a bit of overlap. I'm happiest at 18-21. He wants 20 minimum and preferably 22 or 23.

We haven't put the heating on yet. Last year we improved our loft insulation and later this year we are planning to have solar panels and a battery fitted which should help to keep bills down.

SciFiScream · 07/10/2021 11:45

It's the 7th October. I'm in a windy, cold, dreich part of Scotland. I've had the windows upstairs open all morning (I love a through draught). The thermostat is upstairs. Near an open window.

Apparently it's 21.5°c! How? How?
