Bananas

One of the sweetest moments of being a parent is discovering that when your child starts school or nursery and you're desperately worried about them, you can write notes and doodles to them on a banana that won't show up until later in the day when they come to eat it. And thinking you're a fucking GENIUS for this act of ninja parenting subterfuge 😁 Then, thanks to social media, watching every new generation of parents come to the same realisation every year, and feeling the exact same joy and sense of triumph on their behalf as they post their banana notes and doodles for their little ones 🍌💌

Meghan is that you?

Sparklingbrook · 22/09/2021 06:12

Is this actually a thing? Whatever happened to a post it note in the lunchbox.
I have never taken a Sharpie to a banana in my life.

In all my years of teaching I've never seen a banana in a lunchbox with a note on it, I've seen many post it notes though which always make me smile.

The only time I've ever seen writing on a banana is when EYFS teachers have written letters on or words on them as an extra way of practicing phonics at snack time.

Riiiiight. Not here thanks. I'd rather not draw all over food. The kids will survive.

softplay999 · 22/09/2021 06:30

My mum used to do this and I loved it

Whinge · 22/09/2021 06:38

That's a pretty bananas post from the OP.

I've never seen notes or messages on a banana in all the time i've worked in schools. However, I did once see a banana decorated to look like a minion. The meltdown that occured because the child didn't want to eat said minion was enough to silence the dinner hall, which was pretty impressive. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 22/09/2021 06:39

What do you write on a banana? Is it just bananas or any fruit?

liveforsummer · 22/09/2021 06:56

Nope never seen or heard of this (one dd now at high school and I work in a primary and supervise lunch every day) I've never seen a post it either although one little girl does have all her cling film/foil/bags stuck down with stickers with cute messages on. Dd used to decorate her satsumas like pumpkins 🎃 around Halloween though

Writing on a banana with a biro pen is extremely satisfying! I know it makes my children smile as they always mention it.
Also useful if you’re rushing out on school run and you know all fruit snacks go in a class box (pre-Covid). You can grab a banana and put their name straight on it!

EileenGC · 22/09/2021 07:01

Who has time to decorate bananas? I’m lucky if I have time to shove a banana in a bag before I leave the house.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 22/09/2021 07:03

Ooh I do this. I just write "hi there" or draw a smiley face. It's nice to write on a banana
with a pen because of the texture of the peel. I know some of my friends do it, too.

Sparklingbrook · 22/09/2021 07:16

Well I've missed my opportunity to scribble on bananas, I think it's quite a weird thing to do and TBF I don't think my two would have wanted it anyway.
Could have been useful maybe. i would have written 'Don't forget to hand in the permission slip for the trip' or 'Don't forget to bring your PE kit home' on the banana.

custardbear · 22/09/2021 07:27

@Mariell

Meghan is that you?
🤣 I usually put something a bit naughty in my child's lunch box and he remembers this .. usually a marshmallow ... he loves them 💕 ... he wouldn't read a note 😂

This seems to be a rather more divisive subject than I could have anticipated! Those who know; know. #bananas

What is there to ‘know’ though? Confused
MargaretThursday · 23/09/2021 07:50

Surely most 4yos don't read enough to be able to read any meaningful message on the bananas anyway? So it's basically for the mums to post on SM and feel smug that they're impressing people like the OP.

EggSheeran · 23/09/2021 10:32

This post has all levels of cringe over it.

Are you trying to showboat your amazing parenting skills or are you trying to be the next Motivational Speaker for all parents?

ChessieFL · 23/09/2021 10:34

I’ve never done this, never even heard of it until now!

DD is now 11 and at secondary school, don’t think she would thank me if I started writing notes on her banana now!!

Augusta1 · 24/09/2021 06:40

I thought everyone wrote messages on bananas for their children. I did it for mine when they were little and see it all the time in the school I work in. When I went off on a training course, my DD wrote a message for me on my banana. 😊

GoodnightGrandma · 24/09/2021 06:43

I’ve done it and my kids are grown up now.

Sparklingbrook · 24/09/2021 08:18

No never heard of it and seems a bit weird to me. Maybe it’s a regional thing and it never reached us.

SylvanasWindrunner · 24/09/2021 08:21

I remember as a kid I always wanted to send a banana in the post to my best friend.

Knowing my kids, I'd need to pitch it as "eat me" and "drink" Grin
