Urgh. Fallen for a scam

Yep. I know I know, Facebook market place is full of scammers and I should definitely know better but I was sucked up in thinking I was finally going to get my hands on a dyson airwrap complete. I've been wanting one for ages but every time I go to buy it, it's out of stock so resorted to second hand.

Scammer said they moved due to studies, which seemed reasonable as I checked the profile, and said they would post today recorded delivery if I wanted to bank transfer. Stupidly after even discussing with DP at the possibility of a scam I transferred the funds apparently to their 'dad' as 'she' had a new phone and didn't have her banking app set up yet. My banking app confirmed the name was a complete match which made me feel reassured and I did click I was buying online goods - hopefully that will help with any recall should funds remain. The scammer did send a photo of the parcel showing my address whilst in the post office but when asked for a tracking reference refused to provide one.

I resorted to asking a friend to message to see if it's available from their account. Low and behold, it apparently still is and they encountered the same spill I did Sad

However, I have managed to locate the toe rags actual Facebook given their name is unusual as per the banking transfer. They are 17 and posted photos of mummy and daddy's car complete with number plates and subsequently found their mum's Facebook as a result of them commenting on the photo. Again, lots of public information including them holding a senior job in the NHS....

I have already reported to action fraud and my bank but the likelihood of having my money back is zilch. I'm half tempted to message the mum and ask if her child X has bank account ABC then I suggest they make arrangements to return the funds but equally don't want to get into a tit for tat. I know it's definitely them though as the sort code of the bank matches their Facebook location and google says it's a little village.

somewhat pointless thread so I can vent at how stupid and naive I was for a bloody hair styler.

Lesson firmly learnt and I'll just need to be quicker when the in stock emails land next time

Or find the mum on linked in?

Oh bless you OP. I'd be furious with my 17 yr old if she did this.

As for Airwraps: I have spent 50 years being unhappy with my hair, but I'm now pretty happy with it. I bought one from Dyson, on the grounds that they were doing an offer whereby you could return it for a full refund if not happy after 30 days. I kept it (took out a credit card especially to buy it so I could pay it off over a few months).

In case it's useful to you: my hair is poker straight. If I leave it to dry naturally, it dries like a straight helmet. I have spent a lifetime trying to get some wave and body into it with heated rollers, straighteners (used as curlers), barrel brushes - you name it! The Airwrap is the one I'm happiest with, though. In fact, I have given everything else away on Facebook Marketplace as I can't imagine ever using anything else again.

You did the right thing contacting the mum - I suspect a teen scammer would be involved in drugs

Oh bless you, I hope the money is recovered.

I love my airwrap so it is worth the agg. Turns my mousy, boring, neither curly or straight hair into gorgeous bouncy curls with shine in 5 minutes flat! Such a good investment in my opinion.

So sorry this has happened to you, I was scammed a few year ago by a fake ticket seller. It was horrible thankfully DH had paid by credit card and we got the money back. Fingers crossed this scammers mum has some decency and you get your money back.

I would also contact the police, there was a bit on crimewatch about this, apparently the majority of under 25s didn't think it was wrong.

Some had been duped into it by applying online for a job etc. It could be a wider thing, or it could be someone who is trying their arm at frauding someone for the first time

Oh dear! What were you thinking 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hope it wasn’t too much money that you lost.
There is someone selling ‘Apple’ AirPods on my local Facebook at the moment. They are cheap and he has a lot of them. Someone has asked if they are genuine 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

If the mum has any open posts you might be best commenting on them to alert her to check her messages. Your message will go straight into the requests folder and she won't necessarily see it.

As for the airwrap. Dd had one last Christmas. She is distinctly unimpressed and the only thing stopping her from selling it is the amount of scammers trying to buy them as well. I tried it myself and all the curls fell out of my thick long hair within the hour. There are better devices out there I'm sure.

You can report those listings to Facebook as 'believe to to counterfeit'. They do remove them from experience.

You def did the right thing contacting her mum but the message might be lost in the 'others' section. Send a friend request as that might alert her

@BingeOnChocolate

As of yet it's not been read but unlikely me who's now redoing email stock notifications with stockists via dyson themselves, the mums likely asleep.

Checked QVC and they have the standard length barrel in stock but dyson have long attachments you can buy individually so this might be an option!

If anyone has an airwrap please tell me it's worth all this agg I've had tonight Grin

I didn’t like it

Scare the brat. Message back and tell them you've already contacted their mother and will be going to the police next.
