How to lose weight - morbidly obese

Questionwork · 21/09/2021 21:50

Morbidly obese. Can't seem to shift the weight. Tried various diets. Exercise. Getting older and concerned for my health. What do I need to do? Gastric band?

Yes NatashaRf, me too. Personally I've found I don't even need to go super low carb but I've learned my body cannot handle highly refined carbs or snacking. Cut the sugar, ultra processed food and add in some intermittent fasting and everything changed. Like I said above though learning that my obesity wasn't caused by me being a greedy, lazy slob but by genetic predisposition, hormones and living in an obesogenic environment was what enabled me to make the changes needed.

You need to get to the root of why you overeat. Do not diet - things like Slimming World will work for a while but ultimately all diets are damaging in the long term and just make you think about food constantly. Work on your mental health first and make small positive lifestyle changes. I second everyone who said therapy. I have been obese for most of my life - had therapy earlier this year which helped me tackle my own reasons for eating too much and not moving enough and have lost over 3 stone now without even trying. Not on a diet, not calorie counting or limiting certain foods. It has been really eye opening. I find myself naturally just wanting to eat more healthily and exercise more because I want to look after myself. Self-esteem plays massively into weight loss. Good luck OP.

Intermittent fasting.

I now eat within a 2-hour window every day so it would b2 2;22.

I had intended to do the 800 cal diet but then decided to not bother counting at all. I have one substantial meal a day, those meals range from a healthy homemade vegetable pasta to a takeaway. I figured whatever I ate in that window would be a lot less than I would eat over the course of a day so I don't need to restrict it too much.

I've found it far easier than calorie counting, I'm rarely hungry and have lost 7kg in 3 1/2 weeks. I've not been able to exercise because of a leg injury but once I can swim again i expect I will lose weight faster.

If you google videos of Prof Roy Taylor anf the diabetes diet there is a lof of good info on fasting, the principles also apply to non diabetic people.

Good luck OP.

Lots of good advice but really, low carb and fasting is my vote

Works a treat and removes those demon cravings within a few weeks - yes, it really does !

Atkins and walking worked for me. Do talk to your doctor first, though.

doadeer · 23/09/2021 19:43

For me... It starts with an honest reflection on why the weight is as high as it is. There's no point anyone recommending something that won't fit with your life.

PileOfBooks · 23/09/2021 19:46

I am too and terrified by it. All happened since birth of second child. I have some psych issues too but can't access help through gp...

Will read up this thread. Every now and then I read research which suggests diets fail amd 95% people dont keep weight off long term. And panic.

I struggle to keep on top of cooking and the house and planning meals.

Shopaholic100 · 23/09/2021 19:58

Does your Gp offer Slimming club referrals? Mine did about 4 years ago, they offered 12 weeks and if I lost 10% of my body weight I could have another12 week referral with slimming world. It really gave me the drive and determination to lose weight try and get the next 12 weeks for free. It’s the best thing the NHS has ever done for me as it played a large part in reversing a medical condition which could have had life a changing impact, which I didn’t know was weight related.

Before anything your head needs to be in the right place and you need to identify why you want to lose weight. I’ve gone off track and taken the scenic route on my weight loss journey.

I wish you luck.

Genetics are the main factor for predisposition to obesity. Calorie counting is miserable and on the whole not sustainable for most. Eat less move more has a colossal failure rate? Why? The human body is more complex than a furnace burning fuel. Seriously, research the hormonal basis of obesity. I'm sure for some people investigating emotional causes of overeating might be helpful but for very many it is genetic/hormonal in basis.

PileOfBooks · 23/09/2021 22:09

For most people slimming clubs just increase the weight.

Namelessnancy · 23/09/2021 22:31

@PileOfBooks

For most people slimming clubs just increase the weight.
And the cruelest part is that when they fail the victim blaming starts. If you don't lose weight on a diet plan and keep it off it can't be the diet plan's fault, it must be your gluttony/laziness/lack of willpower..Yep, obviously when obesity levels took off in the last few decades it's due to total loss of willpower and self control at population level...
Shopaholic100 · 23/09/2021 22:44

I agree slimming clubs are not for everyone, you really need to look at your lifestyle and see what suits you. Also try out different ones, my group is excellent and it’s like a therapy session but I’ve been to other slimming world sessions which were not as good. Counting individual calories just doesn’t suit my lifestyle, I need an easy to follow plan.
