Which is a reliable energy company that's unlikely to go bust?

Mine, Utility Point, already has so I've been switched to EDF.
I'd like to compare the 'safe' companies and switch to their best tariff, probably longish term ... maybe a year or two.
Any suggestions appreciated?

The moneysavingexpert comparison site lets you select only bigger/more reputable companies, I think.

SpnBaby1967 · 21/09/2021 08:52

Any of the Big Six really, so British Gas, NPower EDF, Scottish Power etc.

I'm with Octopus who are brilliant, but no idea if they are one of the "at risk" companies??

40sNonBlondes · 21/09/2021 09:01

NPower went already! They transferred existing customers in the spring

BarbaraofSeville · 21/09/2021 09:03

Someone posted a graphic on this thread which may help.

However, due to the price cap, current advice is to be on EDF's standard tariff for the next six months at least, as all the new fixes are likely to be more expensive, but obviously do a comparison for your circumstances.

Ilikewinter · 21/09/2021 09:03

Octopus

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 21/09/2021 09:03

I've been with eon for a year and just renewed with them. It's a tumultuous market so hard to predict but based on the past year they have been ok and they offered a lower rate than octopus - octopus were the next cheapest.

HauntedDishcloth · 21/09/2021 09:34

EDF is safe given they're building new power plants in this country.

Mabelface · 21/09/2021 09:39

I've just switched to Eon.

rocklamp · 21/09/2021 11:05

We're with Eon.

RogueV · 21/09/2021 11:06

We have just switched to Sainsbury’s energy on a 2 year deal. It came up top on money saving expert

Sugarandtime · 21/09/2021 11:08

Octopus

Sugarandtime · 21/09/2021 11:22

Also, if you choose to change to a company that offer a cash back if someone referred you even better. You may as well get extra credit on your account if you can.
There is a topic on Mumsnet that has people’s referrals codes.

FreedomAintWorthNothing · 21/09/2021 13:01

@Sugarandtime where is the topic that has people’s referrals codes?

@FreedomAintWorthNothing
If you go not the Money section of topics.
It’s in the ‘Promo Codes & Bargains’ section.

Stupid question alert. I know gas prices are set to rocket, I don't have gas (only electricity and oil) will the price rises still effect me?

Dollywilde · 21/09/2021 13:22

@lostllamasociety I think the gas price rises refers to wholesale gas, which is where our power stations get their original energy from. So I know both my gas and electric prices will be going up because the electricity comes from wholesale gas originally anyway.

Not sure about oil power but I'm guessing a general price rise will affect all energy sources. I'm with Bulb and they're struggling, even though all their power is from renewables, because if the price of gas goes up so does the price of all other energy sources.

MrsDThomas · 21/09/2021 13:24

Im with Scottish power. Never switched.
Now im thankful.

LostLlamaSociety · 21/09/2021 13:30

Thank you @Dollywilde. That makes perfect sense.

PattyPan · 21/09/2021 13:48

I've been with Good Energy for 3 years and really rate them. They are a smaller company but they generate a reasonable amount of their own energy from wind and solar farms they own (as do Ecotricity, Engie and Eon) and buy the rest directly from generators so I don't think they are as much at risk because they don't have to buy it on the wholesale market as I understand it. They posted good H1 financial results as well. I imagine companies which don't generate any or as much of their own energy are more vulnerable.

dementedpixie · 21/09/2021 13:54

I'm also with Octopus
Happy with them too

Frazzled2207 · 21/09/2021 13:55

Octopus. I hope they’re safe but not certain

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 21/09/2021 13:55

Take care looking on money saving expert ... in the last 2.5 ish years they've recommended two providers to me who went bust (Green Network Energy and Tonik). Was a ball ache. Twice Confused

Joystir59 · 21/09/2021 15:44

I'm with Avro who are really cheap but very small and highly likely to go bust. I'm reluctant to switch right now has have £100 built up with them over the summer. What would others do? Current deal due to end next month.

dementedpixie · 21/09/2021 16:24

If they go bust you will be moved to another provider with no loss of service. If they are cheaper then maybe stick with them for now

TheQueef · 21/09/2021 16:28

There was a big fire in the electricity infrastructure recently Llama that will have a hit on all electricity customers too.
