How do you approach applying for a vacancy within your own organisation?

I work for a LA in Adult Social Care. I have seen another role I would liek to apply for. It is a sideways move so not a promotion, but it would mean moving from the team I am in, to another team who are community based. It is a general vacancy so not internal.

I have absolutely no idea how to approach this, and what the etiquette is. Should I email the person named on the advert? Tell my manager or just apply and see what happens?

It is generally expected that you would notify your current line manager before applying for an internal position. So I would do that and then liaise with HR regarding new opportunity.

I would speak to your manager first.
It would be beneficial to get their recommendation and support too plus it would look bad on both of you if your manager finds out from someone else that you're applying for other jobs

Would you not just apply in the same way as everyone else does? And then if your shortlisted, interview. (Not LA, but that's how it works in the NHS).

It's good practice to contact whoever is named on the advert I always think, and ask if you can chat about the role.

If you feel comfortable telling your manager, it's worth a conversation, although only you know whether it would be a good idea / if your manager would keep it confidential. Or if you weren't successful whether it would help a development discussion. If I knew one of my team was looking at other roles, 1, I'd support them, and 2, if they weren't successful, I'd work with them to see what aspects of that different role particularly interested them to see whether there was potential in their current role to try and develop that interest.
