Selling old furniture... HOW?! WHERE?!

I'm not very savvy at this stuff, wonder if I'm missing a trick. I've got a couple of pieces of furniture to sell. Solid wood stuff, pretty much brand new. A media unit and a console table. I've had listed on gumtree and Facebook for aaaaaaages and no takes. Listed at £75 each open to offers.

Is there a magical site online where I might have better luck? I've tried googling and loads comes up so it's all a bit overwhelming.

If you're not getting any interest, they're too expensive.

Try Free cycle or Gum tree or Craigslist.

FB marketplace and several local selling FB groups.

You're probably over valuing them. Try dropping the price.

I think a lot of people don’t want to purchase large second hand furniture because they often have to factor in van hire and finding people to help them move the items.
Much easier to purchase from a shop and get delivery included.

That's interesting, never thought about transport. I'm confident they'd fit in most bigger cars quite easily but probably struggle with smaller ones.

Price wise - £75 didn't seem extortionate to me, but I'm happy to accept if people think they're overpriced. Anyone able to suggest what sort of price they'd pay for this sort of thing?

I'm not looking to make a fortune, but if we're getting in the £20 range then I'd prefer to make room for them in the loft and see if they come in handy years down the line.

I'd have a look on your local Facebook marketplace and gauge prices. Round here, furniture is typically under £50

Just search for similar items on selling sites to get a rough idea on how to price them. Rough guess £30 each and you'll still get people haggling. That's why I prefer to donate to charity shops.

Gumtree is good

ReeseWitherfork · 20/09/2021 10:15

Thanks all. I've had a look on gumtree and all of the comparable items are for £100+ so I've saved them to see if they actually sell. The only ones cheaper seem to be IKEA.

Furniture only seems to move on our local selling sites when they're listed around £20.

We have a local furniture recycling charity, and they end up giving away some media units because they have so many of them, they don't sell so they try to give them away as they take up space they can use to sell other things.
Also, depending on the console table, you get can a brand new on delivered for under £100 so people may prefer to do that than faff around with collecting a second hand one.

IKEA stuff sells well secondhand because they change the finishes periodically and people want to match what they already have.

Other secondhand furniture will sell if priced right - you won't get anywhere near what you paid for it. You could try a conventional auction, but your selling costs will be higher. If your stance is that you get some cash for it and it gets taken away then price it to sell. If that's too low for you to stomach then store it if you might re use it in future. Or donate it to charity. If you've had good use of something since you bought it then does it really matter?
