Why would specific jobs affect how you're taxed?

I can see that religious minister might, historically, be in an anomalous position: large property provided by the Church, but a salary far lower than would afford such a property, plus, of course the historic power of the Church. Why, though, would that apply to other religous ministers?

And why would the other jobs affect the way the person is taxed? What's special about, say, invigilating?

Haven't got an answer but I also have an untaxable portion of pay when I do adhoc election work ie presiding officer and vote counting .

Have no clue why I get a gross pay amount and then a taxable pay amount . The taxable is what appears on my p60 and I have to submit on my tax return

I think the exam specialists are taxed at source even though they are not employees of the exam boards, so I guess when they have to fill in their self assessments HMRC need to know that tax has already been deducted for that portion otherwise they'd be taxed again?

Religious ministers are not employed, they are office holders.
They used to have a section of the tax office who dealt specifically with them.

Quite a lot of religious ministers get a house with their job, and some are 'house for duty' which is different from those who get a stipend.

They also have lots of expenses - and I think some of them are taxed and others aren't.

If you Google there are HMRC helpsheets for each of those that explain in tedious detail.
