Does anyone know how I work out how many holiday days I will grt

I start a new job on Monday for the NHS. It’s a 365 day service and I’ll be working 5 days a week on a rota (37.5 hours). The holiday entitlement is 35 days including 8 days bank holidays.

I’m under the impression holidays run from April to April? I’m just trying to work out what my pro-ratered (sp?) entitlement is so I can sort holidays and childcare for ds.

If anyone can help that’d be great! Thanks

Also I know I can ask when I start but I won’t see my line manager for a couple of weeks as she is on annual leave

If it’s 35 days on standard 37.5 hour contract then you are not pro rota. Do you mean if you start mid September how many holidays you get between now and 4th April?

35 days divide by 52 weeks = 0.67 days leave each full working week

28 weeks left from now till 4th April
0.67x 18.8 days so 19 full days can’t give you half day leave.

Gov.uk has a holiday calculator which might be helpful. Input your start date/employers holiday year start date and it should at least give you an indication.

Mandalordeloris · 18/09/2021 21:48

I'll warn you now, if it is a 365 day service don't expect to get school holidays or Christmas off ever. Other than that, you'll be fine.

MyMushroomsInATimeSlip · 18/09/2021 21:54

They can give 0.8 days of leave is they work out leave entitlement in hours

SnuffleBadger · 18/09/2021 22:12

Do you have a start date? If it is anything other than the 1st of the month you forfeit any leave for the month you start e.g if you start this month you won't get any entitlement for September and if you start part way through next month you won't accrue any leave for October. Very strange but I have been stung by this when changing trusts.

This is a handy calculator nursingnotes.co.uk/nhs-annual-leave-holiday-calculator/#.YUZWFCR4UWM

141.346 hours (round down to 141?) - usually calculated in hours.

Mandatorymongoose · 18/09/2021 22:17

Calculator here: link

But basically you will get all the bank holidays between now and April (so Christmas and New Year? Don't think there is another)and then your normal leave - all bank holidays, pro-rata for how many months you are working (so 27 / 12 then * 6 months Oct - April). Rough guess you will end up with 16.5 days, usually given in hours.

Akire · 18/09/2021 22:22

You don’t get all bank holidays you get them all pro rota. You don’t get extra 3 days if you work December. It’s 8 over the year or else you could work 6m after Easter and before Xmas and get 1 summer bank holiday and another person working 6m September to May gets 7.

AloneInTheWatchtower · 18/09/2021 22:42

Yeah my start date is Monday. I know I’ll have to work Christmas etc, no issue with that at all.

Yeah I just wanted to check how many I’d be entitled to for this annual leave year as I’m sorting out half terms etc with exdp for DS so needed to know how many days I can request, I’ll have a look at the links now

This is what it says about bank holidays in my contract

The entitlement to 8 public holidays per year will be dependent upon the timing of the Easter break, the timing of Easter may mean one annual leave year results in 6 public holidays and followed or preceded by 10 public holidays, where this occurs your annual leave entitlements will be amended to reflect this.

It's normally written as 27 days plus BHs so it could be that you'll get the proportion of 27 for the rest of the leave year plus all remaining BHs.

This will work out differently, and lower I think, than the whole 35 days, scaled down to take account that you are starting mid year.

That's probably why you could get different numbers of AL days, as it is possible for Easter to fall in April one year and March the next, but I think it's only every few years.

Mandatorymongoose · 19/09/2021 08:16

If you start mid year you get the proportion of your normal annual leave (27 days) that is equal to the proportion of time you work. So if you work 6 months you get half of 27 days. If you work 9 months you get 3/4 of 27 days etc.

For bank holidays you get whatever bank holidays fall in the period you are actually employed. Any that occur before you are employed don't count. They aren't done proportionally. If there happen to be 5 between you starting and the end of the leave year you get 5, if there are 0 you get 0. Doesn't matter how long that period is, if you start mid year. You can still book them when you want to (assuming your service isn't closed bank holidays)

yellowdigsaur · 19/09/2021 08:28

Are you sure your holidays are 35 days?

Widespread NhS is 27 days at start, 29 after 5 years and 33 after 10 days. I've never heard of anything different in my 15 years.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/09/2021 08:31

It's 35 days including BHs, ie 27 + 8. The OP says she works in a service that runs every day, so weekends and BHs are normal workdays so she'd need to use a day of leave to take one of these off if it's one of her work days.

AloneInTheWatchtower · 19/09/2021 09:01

Thanks everyone. I used one of the calculators above which came out at 15.5 days.

October-April is 6 months so that sounds about right, if I totally disregard the bank holidays and just divide the standard 27 days by 2 (due to it being 6 months left of this annual leave period) it’s 13.5 days then Christmas Day and Boxing Day= 2 bank holidays that’s 15.5.

I won’t be working Christmas Day this year, I’ve been advised the roster for that is completed in august so will that make a difference?

Thanks again

I work for the NHS and we use EASY to fill in our timesheets/book leave etc. If you use the same it will state clearly what your amount of leave is for this April-April.

Mandatorymongoose · 19/09/2021 13:30

New years day is also a bank holiday so you should get that too.

It doesn't matter if you don't happen to be on the rota on Christmas day, you should still get the bank holiday as leave as you will still be working your 37.5 hours that week so still entitled to the 7.5 hours back for the bank holiday.

AloneInTheWatchtower · 19/09/2021 15:37

Ah yes of course, totally forgot about NYD. Thank you!
