Does/did your Mum say 'ooh atishoo' or 'ooh pardon' whenever she heard a baby sneeze or burp ?

Or was it just mine ? She did it without fail, every time. Similarly, she'd always comment on things like hanging baskets or patches of wild flowers that caught her attention.

I think it is having young children, or being a nursery or primary school teacher.

It becomes second nature to narrate everything, 'Ooo, pushing the red car. Brmmm, brmmm!' 'Look at all the sheep!'

I find I am back into it again with my mum having dementia. A patch of wild flowets or a hanging basket absolutely demands comment!

listentomydeclaration · 18/09/2021 21:12

strange question to ask. do you think that's unusual or weird Hmm?

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2021 21:14

No

LubaLuca · 18/09/2021 21:15

I have no idea about babies burping and sneezing, I can't think if it's ever happened when I've been with my mum! I don't think we tend to go to places where there are many babies. Probably when my children were babies she made some soppy response to their sneezes etc, but she wouldn't do it to a stranger's baby.

Having baskets and things, yeah she likes to spot and comment on nice floral displays. I do too.

Topseyt · 18/09/2021 21:17

No. Never.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 18/09/2021 21:20

No… I’ve never heard MIL do it either.

WildRosie · 18/09/2021 21:21

I thought it may well have been almost exclusive to my Mum. Ta.

I do it myself

Guaranteed to get a lovely big smile from a baby if you copy their sneezes. “Ooh, aTISHoo, bless you”

Or “bad cough” when they cough.

I thought everyone did it. My grand daughter loves the attention and of course she does false sneezes and coughs to get it. I am happy to supply.

LizzyBennett · 18/09/2021 21:26

I thought everyone did it? Even strangers on the bus would tell my son he had a terrible cough and so the coughs got more dramatic as he lapped up the attention

WhatMattersMost · 18/09/2021 21:36

This kind of mirroring plays a critical role in a baby's development. People who acknowledge and repeat back what they're doing help them to make sense of the world and their place in it. So to an infant, a sneeze might be confounding. But then to look into the eyes of an adults who has made sense of it to them is a form of anchor.

This is critical.

WhatMattersMost · 18/09/2021 21:38

To illustrate this, why is it that a child who falls over looks to its caregiver before it starts crying? Because that child needs to know how bad things actually are - and they get that from the facial expressions and noises that adult is making.

Niffler92 · 18/09/2021 21:38

My grandmother did this and also used to say something like ‘sah ha’ when we sneezed or coughed think it might have been from one of the many languages she spoke before English.

Holidaytan · 18/09/2021 21:39

I do this with my dog!

LapinR0se · 18/09/2021 21:40

I do this alllll the time. My babies think it’s hilarious

ofwarren · 18/09/2021 21:42

I do it with my cats 😆
"Big yawn!"
"Atchoo, bless you"

confessionsOfa · 18/09/2021 21:45

No never. I've never heard anyone do that.

GenderApostatemk2 · 18/09/2021 21:57

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t automatically respond to a baby in that way, it’s almost without even thinking. My Grandson even fake coughs now to set off his Henry hedgehog.

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/09/2021 22:42

Yep I do that with dd who is 4 months. I also done it when my older daughter was a baby.

Cheeeeislifenow · 19/09/2021 00:40

Do you not go "ooooh big yawn!" When they yawn, this is an unspoken written rule no?

whatswithtodaytoday · 19/09/2021 01:51

I often find myself saying 'Ooh ducks' or 'Look a tractor' when I'm on my own, because I'm so used to narrating for my toddler. It's normal, isn't it?

Pikamoo · 19/09/2021 02:17

I do this and I'm 30! Always say oh bless you when a child or baby sneezes. Also saying whoops when anyone slips, that ones quite embarrassing sometimes if it's a grown adult I don't know. I literally can't help it though - it just slips out! That's nothing to do with kids though, I did that way before I had DD.
