Covid permitting obviously. Seems to hugely vary in DS’s Reception class.

My DC5 (just started yr 1) does ballet and tap lessons at school at the end of the day (would be in after school club if not doing those as I’m at work), swimming lesson on Friday after school and French club and horse riding on Saturday morning. I like to keep Sunday clear of activities for a day off. Seems to be about right and not too tired, but if it was too much we would drop things. DC would do more if I allowed it - I am having to say no to tennis and gymnastics!

When DD was YrR we didn’t do anything after school except visit the park on our way home for 15 mins. She had swimming on a Saturday morning.

geminiflanagan · 18/09/2021 17:22

When dd was in Reception and Year 1, she didn't do anything. She was too tired, and it was just too much!

Year 2 she did craft club and Beavers...last year was nothing obviously!

But x2 a week max for us. And pref mon-wed rather than Thurs & Fri

We are in the US but we use wrap around childcare in the form of an after school nanny (in the US they are just called babysitters).
And no they don’t do anything because they are quite tired. Maybe a trip to the park when the weather is nice but where we live is very cold for a lot of the year.

DS is 5 and just started year 1. He does swimming and football, both on a Sunday. He's on the waiting list for Beavers.

ofwarren · 18/09/2021 19:31

My 5 year old does none.
My 7 year old does tennis, dance and basketball through school. Extra curricular activities.
My 5 year old will do them too, once he's old enough to attend.

ImFree2doasiwant · 18/09/2021 19:38

I've got 1 just started reception and 1 in yr 2. They go swimming once a week. 1 day after school childcare with physical activity. Yr2 does beavers.

That's plenty really. The youngest is shattered.

A child in yr2 is doing 2xswimming, 1 beavers, 2 tutoring sessions, and drama club. I have no idea how either the mother or the child manage it

@Twilightstarbright

Thank you. Those of you who use wrap around care or a childminder, do they do sports or go the the park, or just playing/arts and crafts/tv?

So, our childminder has a big garden and looks after quite a few kids - so it's a fairly free flow experience. When it's not cold I'm usually collecting the DC from outdoors, where they're playing on a climbing frame or swings, or doing 'gymnastics' in the garden (or giving the tortoises a wash, or feeding the chickens, or helping collect fruit or plant things). In the winter she puts on lots of crafty bits - they bring home peg people and pictures and homemade snow globes or Christmas wreaths etc. And sometimes they're snuggled up on the sofa watching a film with a hot chocolate! It's very relaxed but I don't mind that as school is full on for littlies.

Your childminder sounds wonderful!

My reception dc does karate, swimming and tennis, and also Sunday school. He’s a bundle of energy and I can’t seem to knacker him out, he keeps asking to do football classes as well so I sometimes take him to a payg football club. It’s really expensive though, trying to figure out what to cut out and it will probably be tennis and/or karate

PinkSkiesAtNight · 19/09/2021 14:19

My reception age DS does capoeira x2, swimming x 1, and has just asked to do football x2. We are not UK and he has been at school for 2 years already. It's not too much for him, he is out like a light at 8.30, but if I try bedtime any earlier, we get more fussing and faffing around, and he actually goes to sleep later. It works for us. Now he is an only, I have time and just about (!) money.

PyjamaMamma · 19/09/2021 14:24

Mine did football, ballet, gymnastics and Rainbows once she turned 5. Apart from guiding, they were all after school clubs at school so she just stayed an extra hour on those days.

MrsPerfect12 · 19/09/2021 14:25

Gymnastics, swimming and football.

Bunnycat101 · 19/09/2021 15:00

My 5yo does loads but she’s like the Duracell bunny and needs the stimulation. Some of her friends are knackered by school in a way she isn’t. I remember people saying how tired their kids were at school pick-up. Mine has had to be in wrap-around from early on in reception and hasn’t been tired-out. Not sure what my youngest will be like.

purplecarrot23 · 19/09/2021 15:27

Gymnastics, swimming, Judo, Dancing
