I'm usually great at presents but I'm completely stumped.

She's mid 60s, works long shifts, has aches and pains but would ha hate a massage, loves her dog. Isnt into fancy food or alcohol. Would want an "experience"

Any ideas at all very gratefully received. Budget flexible for the right gift.

How about a magazine subscription? Or some cosy slippers to put on when she comes in. Bathy bombs?

73kittycat73 · 18/09/2021 12:05

Lol, bath bombs even. Grin

Ha bathy bombs sound cuter!

She doesn't read for pleasure and has several pairs of slippers. I'm so stuck

If she would like an experience how about going out shopping for the day and buying her lunch or taking her out for afternoon tea? Day or afternoon at a spa together?

My DM didn't read for pleasure until she retired but she would have loved a magazine subscription, as suggested above.

Just thought of something else. A couple of businesses locally are offering Christmas Wreath making sessions. You could give her a token gift and book you both onto one of those so that you get to spend done time together and she gets a lovely door wreath as well.

Or tickets to go to the theatre again now they're open again.

I'll shut up now Grin

An artists drawing of her favourite flowers in a bouquet? Etsy artists seem to do these. I thought were quite sweet. A dreamland faux fur heated throw? So cosy for the winter nights approaching. X

Ah DominicRaabsTravelAgent, you were so helpful but I'm so sorry my post was a typo, she wouldn't want an experience.

She really won't read, she's not arty, she's quite young at heart although ironically the heated throw would be perfect but I got her one last year

Thanks so much for your posts anyway everyone.

I’m struggling too OP. I got my DM a gold bracelet from my DD but it’s a big birthday (about ten years older than your mum) and I have not seen her since December 2019.
I’ve thought about:
a weekend break
She doesn’t really read for pleasure but I was going to get her the book from escape to the chateau.
Jewellery with her birthstone
Some La Mer cream
New handbag
Not all or even any of these really rock my world though
In the past I’ve bought beautiful linen and quilts from Cotton and Cologne
White Company cardigan
Massage thing (can’t remember the name) to massage aching joints
Olivia burton watch
Jewellery of any kind

talkalarm · 18/09/2021 16:46

Ah a massage thing might a useful addition (like one of those pokey ball things) ... I shall go and investigate... thanks

The aches and pains need addressing …

I read about jacuzzi mats here a while ago. Haven’t tried one but might be worth investigating.

A bit basic perhaps, and the opposite of ‘fancy food’ - but does she have a veg box delivery? No good if she frequents a local farmers market or owns an allotment, but otherwise … A concerted effort to improve any dietary lacks might help her to feel more vigorous.

Will try to think of more …

A foot bath

Blue4YOU · 18/09/2021 18:16

Dog walking gear! Nice cosy fleece tops (this is just coming to me)..
Weekend at a dog friendly cottage with nice pub and walks (my ultimate dream though my old lad has now died 😞).

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 18/09/2021 18:59

Oh, I know! For dog walking - battery powered things that heat up and you carry them or wear them as gloves. (I sound demented, don’t know what they’re actually called.)

Or some really good waterproof boots?

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 18/09/2021 19:01

(Really, aches and pains and long shifts sounds miserable. Is she longing to retire?)

talkalarm · 18/09/2021 19:56

Ah thank you so much everyone! Some brilliant ideas here

(And yes Edmondtina - she tells me she's very much ready to retire but if I know her at all I doubt she actually will when she can!)

How about an Emma Bridgewater Mug with a dog on? They have lots of different breeds on their mugs so you might be able to find one like your DM's DDog. Some naice hot choc should go with it.

Have a look at Turtle Doves as well. They do recycled Cashmere abs make things that may help her joints like wrist warmers.
