Will the contraceptive injection stop PMS?

I get awful PMS. I get joint pain, nausea, extreme fatigue, feel depressed, period pain blah blah blah and I hate it. I feel like I have a really awful 10-14 days a month. I'm on sertraline already but the depressed feelings are so much worse on my period. I'm wondering if having the contraceptive injection will stop all or some of this. I know I need to speak to my GP but wonder if anyone has experience.

I’d be worried it would do the opposite from what I’ve heard of the hormonal effects of the injection

momiamarichman · 18/09/2021 03:03

I had it at 14 and bled for 13 weeks straight every.single.day.

I was suicidal by the end of it. Did me absolutely no good, I still struggle with awful heavy and painful periods but I've been off BC now for a few years and it's no different on them or off so I've figured it's healthier to just be off them Smile (I'm 22 btw!)

No - it will be like having PMS all the time.
Go and see your GP.

@Lovingmylife I had this done about a month ago. I suffered with painful cramps and PMS. After giving birth 5 months ago the bad cramps just stopped. However I'm now on my period and my mood swings have somewhat like a rollercoaster plus I've been bleeding for 10 days which is now getting me down. I think the injections effect everyone different.

belimoo · 18/09/2021 07:46

How do you respond to the pill op? That gives me awful mental health so I'd never have the injection as I assume it's similar but you can't just stop taking it if you react badly.

PMS is awful isn't it Thanks

The only things that have ever helped me are taking a calcium supplement, as advices at the OMS Clinic at the Hospital and the Mirena Coil.

If you haven't already been referred to the Hospital for PMS, I'd ask for a referral on Monday.

Mine was completely taking over my life.

Ostryga · 18/09/2021 07:50

Have a look at the Mirena coil. I had horrific PMS and after around 6 weeks of having it in my periods stopped and all other related symptoms did too.

It’s been a miracle. Can’t rate it enough.

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 18/09/2021 07:54

*as advised at the PMS Clinic

I really should have checked my post.

I had the implant rather than injection and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It made me depressed and a bit suicidal on occasion. No idea if implants and injections are similar though.

ArianaG · 18/09/2021 11:58

if you can take the combined pill, this helps for me. I don't have a 7 day break to keep hormone levels more constant and don't have periods anymore

happypet · 18/09/2021 12:05

What investigations have you had for your PMS? I'd want to know if there was a physical cause (endo) or a hormonal imbalance.

I'd go to a family planning clinic. They tend to have more time than your GP and more up to date with contraceptives (IMO) and offer alternatives. Unfortunately, contraceptives tend to be trial and error. Even identical twins can different results from the same pill or injection.

A friend also bled constantly on the injection and her dreadful mood swings. Others are fine. Have you tried the pill? How do you cope with those hormones?

The patch or nuvaring might be another option, as provides a more consistent dose and (I think) lower hormone levels.

talkalarm · 18/09/2021 12:06

Minera coil worked for me too. Before that my pmt took over 2 whole weeks a month. Now,nothing (and no period, bonus!)

heidbuttsupper · 18/09/2021 12:10

I was on the depo injection for years and it worked for me. I now take Sayana the self inject one and Im happy with it

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 18/09/2021 12:28

Yep that’s what it did to me.
Lovingmylife · 18/09/2021 17:49

Thank you 💘 I will look into some of the options suggested and speak to the GP. I just feel like I'll get fobbed off.

Look up the book No more PMS by Dr Maryon Stewart.
I did her Programme - she used to offer telephone appointments- not sure if she does anymore and it totally got rid of my pmt.

Gardenwalldilema · 18/09/2021 18:51

The depot is a dream for me. I bled lightly most days for the first 6 months, but no bleed since. Mood is much more stable, no pms symptoms at all.
Was on it for 10 years pre dc and found it wonderful then as well.

WhoWants2Know · 18/09/2021 19:06

I take the combined pill continuously for PMS. It definitely makes a difference with my moods.
