Will I get in trouble if my work haven’t deducted student loan?

I’m just about to leave a job that I’ve only been in five months. I had a payrise in that time (NHS) so things were a bit up and down with my salary. Anyway, it’s only now I’ve looked at the last 5 months payslips I’ve realised that my student loan was never deducted. I’ve just checked my P45 from my last employer and they ticked ‘yes’ in the box for student loan deductions to continue.

Has anyone ever had this happen? Will I get in trouble when I let student loans know. Currently trying to get hold of them but not having much luck.

I don't think so. It's not your fault if the students loans company/NHS payroll can't do their job properly.

The whole thing with a student loan is that you don't actively pay it back yourself, it's worked out and taken before you get your hands on it.

You won’t get in trouble and it won’t be backdated. The onus is on them. I’d keep quiet if I were you. Don’t feel bad about it - they also take a lot of payments off people when they shouldn’t and they make it a devil to claim it back off them.

Don't worry. They will restart with your next job--just ensure it's checked and comes out on first payslip on new job. Contact payroll if it doesn't. It's not treated the same as a loan from the bank so it's harder to default.

This happened to me and no you don’t, they didn’t even take the missed payments, they just started them up again.

Have you definitely earned enough to pay it back?

YouTubeAddict · 17/09/2021 16:52

@thatsnotmyzoo That’s useful to know, thanks.

@ChimChimeny In the last 5 months, I’ve earned approx £12.5k before tax so I would have thought so. I was in work (on the same NHS band) without a break in service prior to this.

This happened to me. I even rang up the SLC to say I was worried they weren’t taking the payments from my monthly payslip, as I was worried they would backdate the payments and I would owe them money. They said not to worry about it as they wait for notification from HMRC regarding your pay, then commence taking the payments for your loan. This was a few years ago so assuming it’s the same now, you will be fine. (They never asked for back payments and eventually did just start deductions via my monthly pay)
