Any recommendations for travel in UK late September/early October?

We haven’t booked yet (two adults) so availability may be difficult! We live in London and don’t drive, but could take train for 3/4 hours from London max.

I’d love somewhere with good accessibility for hikes, and possibly near the sea. It would have to be nearby to a town/restaurants since we don’t drive, or somewhere well connected by public transport..

Has anyone been on good UK holidays and would recommend places? Thank you!

London to the Isle of Wight is straightforward by train from Waterloo to Portsmouth. It can take 90 minutes and from there the Fastcats can get to Ryde in less then 30mins. There’s lots to do in Ryde itself and it’s well connected to the rest of the island.

I wouldn’t do the Isle of Wight without a car. We did it with a car for 5 nights earlier this year and struggled to find enough to do. A lot of the towns are very run down seaside resorts. The best places we visited would have been a struggle without a car. Plus the bus was way more expensive than we’re used to in London.

Thanks for the tip about car!

And yes buses elsewhere seem so much more expensive compared to london!

Anywhere in the South Downs would be good. Eastbourne is lovely and great buses along the coast. The downs are on your doorstep so lots of lovely walking.

I love the isle of Wight and they do a bus which basically links all the towns on the island. Also, the train goes along the pier in Ryde which is just awesome. Not entirely practical or useful but really unusual. I don’t really see rundown seaside resorts, I see a slight ‘faded grandeur’ feel to some places like Ryde but that is coupled with absolutely glorious beaches and wonderful scenery. Places like Shanklin and Yarmouth are just charming. There is walking all over the Island and the coastal path as well of course.

The needles is just beautiful and you can get the little glass models with colored sand which take me right back to my childhood🤣
