I get the DS/DS/DH etc etc.
I don't tend to use them but as an abbreviation in text, specifically on forums etc, perfectly acceptable.

There is one however which really, really bugs me.
DDog.
Why?
How is this an acronym?
It takes longer (albeit nanoseconds) to type ddog than just plain dog, and quite frankly looks ridiculous.
When I'm reading threads, in my head ddog sounds like d dog. It grates.

Right, now that's off my chest I'm going to a walk FuckingDog (who is most definitely neither dear nor darling!)

Putting D before any acronym is cringeworthy. I don’t use the acronyms, it just smacks of laziness to me.

OK and U.K. are the only ones I find acceptable.

dontgobaconmyheart · 17/09/2021 10:24

Realistically the whole set up is contrived and very forum or mumsnet specific.

I often cringe a bit at myself when typing DS/DH etc but weirdly find Ddog a bit of (mild) fun that doesn't offend, I'm not sure anyone actually thinks it's an authentic acronym.

RunningFromInsanity · 17/09/2021 10:29

Probably because most of us prefer our dog
to our husband..

How is this an acronym?

Lieutenant Uhura, open mansplaining frequencies.

It isn't. An acronym is a word like NATO, read as if it were an actual word.

BBC, for example, is not an acronym.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 17/09/2021 11:21

That’s an initialism I believe BadLad

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 17/09/2021 11:22

And I think the OP is talking about abbreviations! Also I think DDog is very funny.

Zarene · 17/09/2021 11:24

I love the occasional ridiculous one -I think I spied DTortoise earlier today.

ShowOfHands · 17/09/2021 11:30

It's just playful. It's okay not to like something though. I don't like the word meal for example but I can't get excited enough about it to start a thread.

It's not really lazy either. If somebody has typed out a considered and thoughtful op (or original post if you prefer) about a concern or worry, using accepted community language which happens to include a handful of abbreviations, lazy isn't a fair descriptor.

Mariell, what about NHS and BBC and NATO and DBS and the RAF and so on? You never abbreviate anything except ok and UK?

ShowOfHands · 17/09/2021 11:31

I love dtortoise. I'm going to call mine the dtortugas from now on.

BadLad · 17/09/2021 11:34

On further checking, it seems many people do consider abbreviations to be acronyms.

Oh, well. Every day's a school day.

'An acronym is a word formed by abbreviating a phrase by combining certain letters of words in the phrase'

Fair enough..they're more abbreviations than acronyms. I suppose its the way I read them, especially MIL and FIL.

Speaking of MILs & FILs, I have noticed neither are ever preceded with 'D'...Wink

It's far from unanimous that they aren't acronyms anyway, so, apologies.
