Help! 6 year old’s bed smells

My 6 year old has started sleeping buried underneath his duvet recently. He says it’s because he’s scared, even though we let him have a lamp on at night. I don’t care as long as he’s happy and he sleeps.

But because he’s buried under there all night, his bed has started to smell! It’s a horrible, sweet, almost vinegary smell. He doesn’t smell usually, even when it’s hot and he’s running around for hours with his friends and is dripping wet. It just seems to be the sweating at night that smells.

We are washing his bedding regularly on a hot wash, leaving windows open, and pulling the covers back to air the mattress during the day. But it has permeated through to the mattress which has now also started to smell, we think we might even need to get rid of it! His PJs also smell after one night.

It wasn’t bothering me too much, just one of those things and a bit of a pain. I assume eventually he will grow out of it. But my husband noticed this morning that his hair had this same smell when he woke up. Kids can be cruel, and I don’t want this to start being a problem for him at school.

Is there anything I can do? Either to help with the smell, or to try to convince him not to sleep completely submerged?! I’m holding out more hope for the former Grin

@purplesequins

is it a 'hamster cage' type of smell? can his dad smell it too? it's boys I'm afraid. airing the rooms help a little.
🤣🤣🤣

Maybe I’ll give the GP a ring just to be on the safe side. I don’t think that’s it, but I’ll have a peace of mind chat.

I would suggest GP too.

I just keep coming back to the fact that it’s only started smelling since he’s started sleeping like that. Before it smelt fine!

Try washing his bedding/duvet/pillows in dettol antibacterial wash stuff. This will help kill any lingering bacteria caused by the sweat. When there are traces of bacteria still in the material, as soon as it's warmed up (body heat) the smell just revives again. I had the same problem with my work shirts in the summer. They would appear clean but as soon as I'd work then for 30 mins they smelt sweaty again. As soon as I started washing them with an antibacterial wash the problem vanished 😊

Are you sure he isn't wetting the bed?

Get a mattress protector anyway, a bit grim not having one.

chocolatepudandchocolatesauce · 16/09/2021 21:21

My small boy also snuggles down under the covers. Once he is asleep I uncover him again. Could you do this or does he wake in the night and snuggle back under?

Doubledoorsontogarden · 16/09/2021 21:24

New mattress?

fruitypancake · 16/09/2021 21:24

Can't you wait until he's asleep and then uncover him a bit?

Colinthedog · 16/09/2021 21:45

Lots of great tips here everyone, thank you so much!

I think I’ll uncover him when I go up to bed and see if he stays like that or burrows back under!

Could you steam his mattress?

2bazookas · 16/09/2021 22:16

You might ask your GP about this, just to eliminate any physical illness like diabetes.

EggbertHeartsTina · 16/09/2021 22:19

I noticed this on my DS (6) a couple of years ago. Vinegar / yeasty smell after a sweaty night. He was referred for blood tests and all was fine but absolutely needs checking out.

He still sweats but not as stinky nowadays - his bedding does still get washed more often than mine Grin he doesn’t wear pyjamas which helps.

DrNo007 · 16/09/2021 22:24

As well as getting his health checked out, use only bedding made of natural fibres. Wool filled duvet, rather than synthetic; cotton sheets; wool filled mattress topper if mattress is foam or has a lot of synthetics in. I find if I wear natural fibres I don’t smell bad even if I sweat, but a day in a polyester dress makes me reek.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/09/2021 22:25

Do you have a mattress cover?

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/09/2021 22:26

Just about every line in National Express.

RandomMess · 16/09/2021 22:37

How much bedding/what tog quilt has he got?

I'm think much cooler layers would be the answer too?

Iggly · 16/09/2021 22:39

The night sweats make me wonder if something is up.

Also get a decent mattress topper, nota horrible plasticky one.

SonicStars · 16/09/2021 22:44

Waterproof mattress protector, thinner duvet, or blanket. Quick shower in the morning. If he's not snuggling up because he's cold then keep the room cool as we enter winter and the heating goes on.
You may find it sorts itself out and you're not having to shower him as regularly.
If he has short hair a morning shower can be super quick anyway.

Peoniesandpeaches · 16/09/2021 22:46

Might be a daft idea but if the burrowing helps him feel less anxious maybe a weighted blanket would help. As it would only be on his body and could have a sheet under it he might be less likely to cook himself at night. My partner is a really sweaty sleeper but we’ve never had an issue with her using a weighted blanket.

mrsfollowill · 16/09/2021 22:54

My Ds was like this from age 4/5 - liked to bury himself deep into the bed under the duvet and of course sweated buckets! Something had to change so he was happy with a thin cotton top sheet he could get right underneath wrapped all round him including his head then the duvet on top moved up or down the bed depending on the temperature.
He still sleeps like this (well as far as I know - he is late teens now his bed is still made up with a cotton sheet!) He also has a fan running all night to keep the room cool even in Winter.
Of course see your GP if you are worried and a new mattress and bedding if you can afford it.

Colinthedog · 16/09/2021 23:01

@mrsfollowill That’s a really good idea, I think that could work. Thanks to everyone for the cleaning and bedding tips as well, but would be great if I could stop the smell in the first place. I’ve also messaged my GP so they will contact me if they want to check him over. Thanks for everyone’s help with this, I feel like we’ve got some good strategies to try out!

Controversial opinion - I’d bring him in with me.
