How to hand in notice when manager is away

Recently accepted a job offer but my manager is currently on holiday for another two weeks.

Notice period is 4 weeks, and my new employer were hoping that I start straight after my notice period.

I only have one manager and I barely speak to my manager’s manager (also in my team) so feels pretty awkward telling them.

Had always planned to speak to my manager in person before sending the formal resignation letter (feels a bit rude otherwise) but that’s not really feasible now.

Would you recommend sending my resignation letter to HR directly (worried this will be rude and unfair to my manager)
or do you think it would be reasonably to ask my new employer to move start date 2 weeks back (so I can wait for manager to come back).

I haven’t signed a contract yet for my new job.

Apologies probably sounds like such a stupid question to ask but I’m not too familiar with workplace etiquette with this being my firstjob Blush

(Just to clarify I have only verbally accepted an offer but I expect to formally sign contract on Monday)

I'd speak to your managers deputy, if they don't have one, or if that is you speak to your managers manager.

I would think it ok to send your notice to HR. Just courtesy copy your manager in case they are checking their emails while away.

Send to HR and send a copy to your manager. Perfectly ok.

Get your contract first.

Hand in notice to manager above if your own line manager is off

I'd speak to your managers deputy, if they don't have one, or if that is you speak to your managers manager.
This. And then send email to HR. Say in your email you'd hoped to speak to your manager first but they are away.
Wole · 16/09/2021 17:40

Oh yes wait until you get your contract

girlmom21 · 16/09/2021 17:41

Wait until your new contract is sent over.

Then email HR and copy in your manager and whoever is covering for them in their absence.

Yes wait until you have signed contract before sending in notice.
overthethamesfromyou · 16/09/2021 17:44

And be sure to say that you are working four weeks notice and your last day will be xx/xx. Have you any accrued holiday?

jobleaver · 21/09/2021 23:28

Thanks
There was a short delay with getting contract but signed it now.
If I were to hand notice in to eg managers deputy (or HR) would email suffice. Reading old threads on here and MNetters said it too rude to mention via email without calling - although as I said before I barely know my managers deputy or HR.
