Indulge me please! If you're wearing a ring, take it off, put it on your phone, and try to scroll with your finger in it.

What happens? What happens if you leave your ring on the screen, but scroll to one side of it?

I have procrastinated tested with several rings and have drawn a couple of conclusion, but would like more data!

Flat edged gold band scrolls normally, as does an open, adjustable, not flat silver ring.

AgnesNaismith · 16/09/2021 17:08

Normal scrolling in both cases here

SquirrelFan · 16/09/2021 17:09

Flat ring, scrolls fine in each case.

Antinerak · 16/09/2021 17:22

Plan flat band scrolls fine, as does engagement ring with large stone. I'm so confused but you somehow still got me to do it. Hmm

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 16/09/2021 17:22

Hmm, having tested further I think the screen must be the deciding factor — my Kindle Fire works, but does seem a bit less responsive with the same gold ring.

I understand that when you touch the screen it affects the electrical field underneath, but that's where I get a bit stuck! Are there any physicists or electronic engineers on MN who could explain?

Platinum wedding ring scrolls both ways, but when trying to remove the ring the writing goes huge.

flyingant · 17/09/2021 16:00

But why tho? Why does this matter? Grin
I only haven't tried it because I don't have a ring.

LukeEvansWife · 17/09/2021 16:02

It’s a good way of risking scratching your screen

Samanabanana · 17/09/2021 16:03

Mine scrolls using both methods! Plain wedding band.

Kenworthington · 17/09/2021 16:04

Flat. Normal scrolling

merryhouse · 17/09/2021 16:10

I would say it scrolls as normal, except that I can't flick upwards to move it fast.

WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice · 17/09/2021 16:16

Scrolls completely normally with finger inside or outside ring

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 17/09/2021 16:22

@flyingant

But why tho? Why does this matter? Grin I only haven't tried it because I don't have a ring.
It doesn't really matter, I was just fidgeting and noticed it!

And being of an enquiring mind, I wanted to know whether it was a universal phenomenon. So I thought I'd ask you lot, since I thought it would be a large pool of people with (a) smartphones and (b) wearing engagement or wedding rings.

Although I do want to know why now! The best guess I have is that my iPhone reads "finger + ring" as one very large input, so it doesn't move (like it wouldn't if you put your entire palm on it and tried to scroll). And not all screens do that.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 17/09/2021 16:26

Obviously not everybody wears an engagement/wedding ring but there are enough threads showing them off for me to know there's plenty! And lots of you will wear other rings as well.

Put your rings back on now Mumsnetters.
Grin

Shakeyourface · 17/09/2021 16:33

My ring with points on it enlarges the screen when I scroll

Pumpkinseedpesto · 17/09/2021 16:40

My fingers are too fat to get the ring off Confused

HerRoyalNotness · 17/09/2021 16:42

Normal outside the ring. Screen text zooms in when scrolling in the ring

BertieBotts · 17/09/2021 16:55

I do know that if you have a stylus for a smartphone it must be made of a conductive material or it won't work, so possibly this is what is affecting the results.

SirGawain · 17/09/2021 16:57

My iPhone scrolls normally using either technique!

HotSauceCommittee · 17/09/2021 17:04

You will take over the world, one day, OP.

ScrambledSmegs · 17/09/2021 17:07

Both A & B - phone screen scrolls as normal (ie without rings). Flat platinum wedding band and non-flat silver ring tested on iPhone.

However I have quite cold hands and the rings really haven't absorbed much body heat. I wonder if that's a factor, especially as in the winter my phone often doesn't respond to my touch.

Dunrovi · 17/09/2021 17:15

Whoa! I have a platinum and diamond eternity band that moves itself across the screen as if magnetic! It won't sit still in the centre. I know it's real though; it's been valued more than once by different jewellers.

couchparsnip · 18/09/2021 07:46

Weird result here. I tried with my wedding band.
It didn't scroll at first but now the phone seems to have learned to ignore the ring.
It scrolled after about 15 seconds of trying.
Now I can scroll straight away.

Explain that one OP!
