What's the first thing you think when you see a pumpkin trail event?

If you see a pumpkin trail being held in October half term, do you think it's related to Halloween or do you think of something else, and if so, what?

Help me resolve a discussion!

I’d think, ‘WTF is a pumpkin trail?’

Similar, then followed with ‘must be a hallowe’en thing’

Of course Halloween related 🎃.

I would just think it was a pumpkin event. It wouldn't necessarily make me think it's a Halloween event, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was a Halloween event either.

Justmuddlingalong · 16/09/2021 14:42

I would think I'd been teleported to America.

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 16/09/2021 14:43

Hallowe'en. Something Americanised. Likely to be almost fun for children so if you have some, give it a go.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/09/2021 14:45

Definitely Halloween/autumn related.

Pumpkins are an autumn thing, so pumpkins can also just be related to autumn rather than just Halloween.

I think they are Halloween events, others are saying they are Autumn events rather than Halloween, so I was curious to see what people thought. Seems most people agree with me that they are Halloween related.

Ditto. And that I had been teleported there close to Hallowe'en, not Autumn in general.
GivenUpEntirely · 16/09/2021 15:06

I'd assume Halloween but there's a whole new crop of people who now celebrate autumnal things including decorating in the same way as Christmas a fool and their money comes to mind but not remotely linked to the old harvest festivals and being grateful for crops thing that used to be celebrated in the UK.

My second assumption would be middle class boden parents trying to #makememories

seaandsandcastles · 16/09/2021 15:17

I would think it was an Autumn event and wouldn’t connect it to Halloween.

elliejjtiny · 16/09/2021 15:23

Halloween

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/09/2021 15:26

I'd think seasonal event, possibly a bit ’pagan' with a small p and would have taken my DC if they weren't now teenage boys far too cool for things like getting out of bed going to things like that.

lannistunut · 16/09/2021 15:28

Autumn, unless the date was close to Halloween.

lannistunut · 16/09/2021 15:28

I love a pumpkin festival Smile

TheSpiral · 16/09/2021 15:30

I would wonder what it involved - what does it involve?! if it is picking pumpkins why is it a "trail"? is it following a trail with pictures of pumpkins or following a trail looking at variously carved pumpkins?

Anyway definitely Halloween.

Jobseeker19 · 16/09/2021 15:31

Halloween, America, food waste

snanagram · 16/09/2021 15:35

We were in the US a couple of years ago in September and drove past lots of pumpkin farms/shops/PYO etc (can you "pick" a pumpkin?)

The one that made us laugh was "Giant Farmer's Daughter Pumpkins"

Turns out that the business was actually called Farmer's Daughter and the pumpkins on offer were big.

I was very disappointed not to encounter the giant farmer's daughter and her pumpkin Grin

For full disclosure the punctuation may not actually have been as I have written it here, but that's how we read it.

Woeismethischristmas · 16/09/2021 15:37

Halloween thing. Mainly it’s a way for me to spend a tenner on a pumpkin that would cost 2 quid out the supermarket plus some overpriced snack.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 16/09/2021 15:42

Just a general children's activity to make money at the autumn half term holiday. I wouldn't think Hallowe'en particularly unless it was called Spooky or similar, or the publicity materials had witches or similar on them.

BlackShadowCat · 16/09/2021 15:58

The pumpkin trail we did was basically some shops in town had a pumpkin in the window. Each pumpkin had a name. We had to pick up a form, find all the pumpkins and write the names on the form and when we finished, we handed it in and got a prize, which was a bar of chocolate. It's just something fun to do and a lot of the businesses had a small discount for pumpkin hunters or had special promotions. It's a good way for them to promote their business. There was no waste or Halloween stuff.
