Your best place to live in the UK and why?

Was wondering if anyone would care to share their ideal part of the UK to live and why? Any southerners here who have preferred the north and moved there or anyone from the north who loves it down south? Would be great to know why?

I've lived in 3 different areas and can say none of them were 'the best'. It's a completely subjective thing. What someone loves about one area, another will detest.

For me it would have to be a university town with sea. I don't care if it is 'rough'. Maybe Plymouth area? Has to be a town with transport links. My brain likes to know I don't need a car, I can meet new people, but also get away. I need to feel connected whilst having the ability to disconnect.

Edinburgh scenery, green space, compact, atmospheric, arts, mary king close, and it has a castle
London varied, big, multicultural, lots of choice what to do where to go, south bank,Hampstead, borough market
Manchester really good vibe, great people, music, arts, drive to amazing scenery
bristol compact, walkable, Clifton suspension wows me every time, great food, artsy, friendly

Exeter - near coast and moor. Really lovely little university city. Gorgeous countryside on doorstep.

Having said what I said earlier about there being no best, I spent 4 years just outside Exeter and loved every second; at times, I miss it so much it hurts! Great little city with enough going on to keep you interested, but so close to the coast, Dartmoor and East Devon countryside, which is where I lived and it was very much a hidden gem.

I have lived in the South West, Edinburgh, Cambridge and South East.

I grew up in the South West but did find it a bit parochial and cut off. I loved the scenery and coastline though.

I actually hated living in Edinburgh, I found people were really unfriendly and it was the only place I struggled to find work. I felt like an outsider there and not very welcome. However when I travelled to Glasgow for day trips I found the complete opposite and loved it.

I also really loved living in Cambridge and liked the vibrancy of the town. The main disadvantage was the number of tourists and boring surrounding landscape.

In the south east I love being able to nip into London, have easy access to really pretty countryside and market towns. I do sometimes miss living in a city but am now at a stage in life where I appreciate a bit more space and peace and quiet. The coastline is an hour away but no match for that in the south west.

@Notdoingthis couldn't agree more. I've lived in 3 different university towns by the sea since I was 20 and they have all been fab.

EspressoDoubleShot · 15/09/2021 20:56

Of all place I’ve lived
1, equally Edinburgh & London
2 Glasgow
3 Bristol
4 Manchester

@Needspace21 love the username!
How reassuring. I have lived in Cornwall, Brighton, Bristol, Gloucestershire and contemplating a next move. Loved Bristol most but need the sea.

Oblomov21 · 15/09/2021 21:10

I've lived in quite a few of the places listed above and whilst I had a hood time there, I wouldn't choose any of them!

I really love Exeter too camperqueen
